Friars Sweep Hartford in Doubleheader

West Hartford, Conn.-- Freshman Amber Carr knocked a three-run homer in game two as the Friars of Providence College defeated the Hawks of Hartford, 4-2 and 5-3, in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Friars grabbed an early 1-0 lead after a RBI single by Heather Nathan in the first inning. The Friars got on the board again in the third inning, as Gwyn Mangini scored on a wild pitch. The Hawks responded in the same inning with Alina Schiavone scoring on Liz Nadeau's sacrifice fly. PC's Bonnie Skrenta then made it 3-1 in the fourth with her RBI triple, but Hartford scored again on an error to cut the lead to one. Jami Servidone sealed the victory in the top of the seventh with a RBI single with two outs.

Nadeau (5-7) threw a complete game while walking only one and striking out four in the game one loss. Melissa Peterson (9-6) garnered the win for Providence, striking out four batters and giving up one earned run.

In game two Andi Miller dropped to 2-8 with the loss. She allowed five runs, five hits and struck out five. Heather Nathan (3-6) collected the win, fanning five batters.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Hawks grabbed an early 2-0 lead after a two-RBI single by Kelly Belmont in the third inning. The Friars responded by posting four in the fourth, including a three-run home run off the bat of Carr.

With the win, Providence improved to 16-17 overall while Hartford fell to 7-17.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, April 15, when they host the Red Storm of St. John's University. Game time of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the Providence Softball Field.
