ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Providence College Softball Friars opened the 2000 Winthrop Invitational with a win and a loss in the first round of the Winthrop Invitational at Rock Hill, South Carolina.
In the opening game versus the College of Charleston, the Friars scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 6-1 decision. Junior righthander Robyn West pitched a strong eight innings giving up one unearned run and four hits to get her third win of the year.
Offensively, the Friars got a solo home run from Nicole Nelson and rbi's from Sarah Morin, Lynette Rosa and Bonnie Skrenta to improve thier record to 6-5 on the year.
In the evening game, the University of Tennesse-Martin got a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh from Jennifer Herron off of reliever Robyn West to give the Skyhawks a 3-2 win.
West entered the game in the bottom of the sixth in relief of Melissa Peterson and pitched out of a bases loaded jam to preserve PC's then, 2-1 lead. Heather Nathan had put the Friars ahead by that score with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth.
The Friars got three hits from Kerri Jacklets in the loss. The Friars are now 6-6 on the season. They return to action on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. when they face East Carolina University.
