Softball Friars Sweep Pittsburgh, 4-1 And 2-0

Providence, Rhode Island - The Providence College softball team got strong pitching performances from Robyn West and Heather Nathan as the Friars snapped a five-game losing streak to sweep the University of Pittsburgh Panthers, 4-1 and 2-0 in BIG EAST action at PC's Glay Field on Saturday afternoon.

West got the doubleheader started by giving up a first inning run to the Panthers on two hits. She slammed the door the rest of the way giving up one more hit while striking out seven and walking four to improve her record to 7-13 on the year. In the nightcap, Nathan scattered seven hits and pitched out of a seventh inning jam for her second shutout of the season. She walked two and struck out nine on the way to upping her record to 4-16.

The Panthers' Gina Bessolo took the loss in game one, giving four runs on five hits. She is now 5-17 on the year. Game two saw Laura LeViere go the distance, giving up two runs on five hits to fall to 6-9 on the season.

Providence scored two in the bottom of the first inning of game one to erase Pitt's 1-0 lead. First baseman Jami Servidone drove in Gwyn Mangini and Lindsay Garfield to put the Friars ahead to stay.

PC added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on rbi singles by Servidone, who was 2-for-3 in the game and Nathan who also had two hits for the 4-1 final.

In game two, the Friars got all their runs in the third on rbi singles by Gwyn Mangini and Kerri Jacklets.

Pitt rallied in the top of the seventh with one out as Tina Barrett singled. She raced to third on a single to center by Clare McGann who advanced to second on the throw to third.

After conferring with Coach Dana Fulmer on the mound, Nathan got catcher Jackie Haar to ground to short with the runners holding and then got Rhianna Rogers to strike out to end the game.

With the doubleheader sweep, Providence is now 12-31 overall and 3-7 in the BIG EAST. Pittsburgh falls to 12-30-1 on the year and is 0-10 in BIG EAST play.

The Friars return to action on Sunday with a BIG EAST doubleheader versus Notre Dame at 11:00 a.m. at PC's Glay Field. Pittsburgh playes two at Connecticut beginning at 12 noon.
