Providence, Rhode Island - Junior first baseman Jami Servidone hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth as the Providence College Friars took an 8-6 extra inning verdict from the St. John's Red Storm in the first game of their BIG EAST doubleheader at PC's Glay Field on Saturday afternoon. St. John's bounced back in the nightcap to take a 7-3 victory.
Even though the games were played in Providence, St. John's served as the home team since they have no home field this season in New York. With the split, the Friars are now 10-27 on the season and 1-3 in BIG EAST play. St. John's goes to 17-22 on the year and picked up their first BIG EAST win for a 1-7 league record.
Providence was led offensively by sophomore catcher Kerri Jacklets who was 3-for-5 on the game with a home run and three rbi's. Servidone also drove in three runs with her homer and a sacrifice fly. Lindsay Garfield and Andrea Weyl each contributed two hits to the attack.
Freshman pitcher Megan Wargin pitched six-and-2/3 innings for the win, the first of her career as she is now 1-2. Gina Calabrese took the loss in relief for the Red Storm. St. John's Ann Raab led the Red Storm attack with three hits and three rbi's.
Game Two saw PC jump out to a 3-0 lead in the third on a three-run homer by Servidone, her fourth of the season. That would be all the runs that St. John's Calabrese would give up as she pitched a complete game to go to 9-11 on the year. PC starter Heather Nathan fell to 3-15 on the season in taking the loss.
St. John's got home runs from Jami DeProspo and Danielle Sweeney to pace the Red Storm offense.
The Friars return to BIG EAST play on Sunday when they travel to Seton Hall for a doubleheader with the Pirates. Game time in South Orange is 12:00 noon.
