Softball Friars Drop Doubleheader At Rhode Island

Kingston, R.I. - The Providence College softball team dropped a doubleheader at the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon, losing the first game, 3-2 in nine innings and then the nightcap, 2-1.

In game one, an rbi single by Andrea Weyl in the fourth and an rbi double by Kerri Jacklets in the fifth gave the Friars a 2-1 lead heading into the last of the sixth. URI got the tying run in the bottom of the sixth after three PC errors loaded the bases. Heather Nathan then walked Samantha Zigmont forcing in the tying run.

In the bottom of the ninth, URI's Beth Benoit got a one out single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Robin Davies then drove her in with a single to center and the Rams had the 3-2 win.

Nathan took the loss to fall to 4-18 while URI's Susan Chymbor pitched 4-and-2/3 innings in relief for the win to go to 10-9.

Game two was a pitcher's duel between PC's Robyn West and URI's Chymbor. Through five innings the game was scoreless until PC's Nathan drove in Jacklets with a single to left field. In the bottom of the sixth, URI scored twice. Benoit tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Davies. Sarah Villa singled and came around to score from first on a error by Nathan for the 2-1 advantage.

Chymbor retired the Friars 1-2-3 in the seventh for the complete game win. She surrendered four hits and and struck out five to go to 11-9 on the year. West pitched a complete game, giving up three hits, two runs with only one being earned. She is now 7-15 on the season.

With the two losses, the Friars are now 12-35 overall, 3-9 in the BIG EAST. URI is 20-29-1 on the year.

The Friars close out the regular season with doubleheaders at Rutgers on Saturday and Villanova on Sunday.
