DURHAM, NH - The 12th ranked University of New Hampshire field hockey team outlasted a pesky Providence College team for a 2-1 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.
UNH (6-2) generated the game-winner on one of its nine second-half corners. Junior Kate Duffy put the ball into play to sophomore Jessica Russell and she centered the ball to senior co-captain Selena Liubakka. Her pass down low was deflected, but senior Caroline Coyne gathered the ball and fired a shot past PC keeper Andrea Weyl (18 saves).
The Friars (2-7) didn't generate much pressure inside the circle the rest of the way, as UNH keeper Amy Pearsall needed to make just one save. Pearsall played the final 24:07 in relief of starting goal keeper Amy Agulay, who made 12 saves and allowed the only PC goal.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead with 2:18 elapsed from the game when senior co-captain Becky Craigue set up junior Kristin Iarrusso's fourth goal of the year. It was Craigue's fifth assist on the season and 25th of her career, which vaulted her into a first-place tie with Kathy Cortez on the UNH career assist list.
Providence battled back and actually had an 11-9 shot advantage and a 7-2 edge in corners at the half. The Friars' hard work finally paid dividends when Erica Hebert, who created numerous dangerous bids with her stickwork inside the circle, scored with 27:27 to play in the second half.
