Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Bryant In Home Opener, 16-11

Rhett Chambers recorded a career-high nine points for the Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated the Bryant Bulldogs, 16-11, on Friday, Feb. 6 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I.  The Friars improved to 2-0 on the season, while Bryant started the year 0-1. Junior attack Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) led the offense with a career-high nine points on four goals and a career-best five assists. Senior long-stick midfielder Ian Olenik recorded career-bests in caused turnovers (six) and ground balls (five).

1st Quarter:
• Bryant opened the game's scoring action to take a 1-0 lead at the 10:59 mark. 
Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) quickly evened the score at 1-1 with his first goal of the day (10:21).
• Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.) scored his first goal of the season and gave the Friars a 2-1 lead. 
• Bryant closed the first quarter with two unanswered goals.
2nd Quarter:
• Bryant found the back of the net with 10:55 on the clock and extended its lead to 4-2 to start the second quarter.
• Providence answered with three-straight goals to take a 5-4 advantage.
• Chambers scored his second goal of the day to get PC within 4-3 (9:34). 
Chris Jaskiewicz (Winter Park, Fla.) followed with his first goal of the season and tied the game, 4-4. 
Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) followed with his first goal of the day at the 5:56 mark to cap the three-goal run to give Providence the lead.
• Bryant responded with back-to-back goals at 4:09 and 2:25 to reclaim the lead (6-5).
• Providence closed the half with consecutive goals to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.
• Joseph scored his second goal of the game and tied the game for the Friars. 
Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.) followed with and gave the Friars a 7-6 lead with 26 seconds remaining in the half.
 
3rd Quarter:
• Bryant opened the third quarter with two goals to take back the lead with 13:02 showing on the clock (8-7).
• The Friars then went on a 6-0 scoring run during a span of 5:22 to break the game open and mount a 13-8 lead. 
• Brazell netted his first of the day, and Joseph followed with back-to-back goals. 
• Chambers got in on the action with his third of the day and Matt Lazzaro (Franklin, Mass.) scored a pair to cap the six-goal stretch.
• Bryant responded with back-to-back goals to close the frame, but the Friars led 13-10 heading into the fourth.
  
4th Quarter
• Providence outscored Bryant 3-1 in the fourth quarter to win the game, 16-11.
• Chambers continued his big scoring day with a goal 10 seconds into the fourth quarter. Olenik got the groundball off the face-off and assisted Chambers' goal.
• Lazzaro netted his fourth goal of the game and put the Friars up 15-10 (8:02).
• Bryant responded with a goal, but Brazell scored a behind-the-back goal, capping the five-goal victory.
  
Notes:
• Chambers registered a career-high nine points on four goals and a career-best five assists.
• Joseph added four goals and one assist for the Friars.
• Olenik recorded career-highs in caused turnovers (six) and ground balls (five) and added one assist.
• Brazell registered career-bests in points (five), goals (three) and assists (two).
• Cam Sterritt (Brampton, Ont.) recorded a career-high 16 saves on a .593 save percentage to start his collegiate career 2-0.
• Jack Cooper (East Hampton, N.Y.) won 13-25 opportunities at the faceoff 'X'  and picked up a career-high five ground balls.
•  Lazzaro netted three goals and one assist for the Friars.
• The Friars tallied 13 caused turnovers to the Bulldogs' eight.
• Thirteen (13) of Providence's 16 goals were assisted.
 
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars travel to Cambridge, Mass., to face No. 13/13 Harvard on Feb. 14. Faceoff is set for 2:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
