WORCESTER, MASS. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated Holy Cross, 2-1, on Friday, Sept. 5 in Worcester, Mass. It looked as though the Friars were headed to overtime for the second-straight game, but junior forward
Lily Procaccianti (Cranston, R.I.) scored the game-winning goal with five seconds left in regulation to lift Providence to victory. The Friars improved to 2-0 on the young season, while Holy Cross dipped to 1-2.
GAME FLOW:
• The game was scoreless at halftime, 0-0.
• Through the opening two quarters, Providence led in shots (12-2), shots on goal (5-2) and penalty corners (5-1).
• Freshman goalkeeper
Ava Porter (Somerset, Mass.) recorded two saves for the Friars in the first half, while Mia McCloskey registered four shots for Holy Cross.
• Early offensive pressure by Holy Cross yielded a 1-0 lead at the 34:57 mark. Maguire Sturgis was credited with the goal on a penalty corner, assisted by Julia Carrozza.
• The Friars were awarded a penalty stroke at 43:54. Senior
Caroline Krebs (Louisville, Ky.) converted the attempt to tie the game, 1-1.
• Procaccianti tallied the game winning goal as she launched a backhanded shot at the doorstep of the goal. She was assisted by
Carly van Benten (Ashburn, Va.).
• Porter finished the game with four saves to earn the victory in goal, while Mia McCloskey registered nine saves for Holy Cross.
NOTES:
• Procaccianti scored her first goal of the season and fifth of her career. It marked her first game-winning goal as a Friar.
• Krebs scored her first goal of the season and second of her career. Both of her goals as a Friar have come off penalty stroke opportunities.
• Van Benten has tallied at least one point in each of the Friars two games to start the season. She recorded her first multi-assist game (two) in the season opener at Boston University on Aug. 29. She recorded her team-best third assist of the season against Holy Cross (Sept. 5).
• Porter improved to 2-0 for the Friars in goal. Through the first two games, she has posted a 1.29 goals against average and a 0.833 save percentage.
• The last time Providence started the season 2-0 dates back to 2021. That year, the Friars opened with wins over Bryant and Boston University.
• Providence finished the game with the advantage in shots (21-6), shots on goal (21-14) and penalty corners (8-3).
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars' begin a seven-game home stand on Sunday, Sept. 7 when the team hosts Merrimack in their home opener at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
