Field Hockey Prepares To Face Holy Cross And Merrimack

Providence will face Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. on Friday, Sept. 5; The Friars host Merrimack in their home opener at Lennon Family Field on Sunday, Sept. 7.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team is scheduled to play a pair of non-conference matches this weekend. On Friday, Sept. 5, Providence will travel to Worcester, Mass. to face Holy Cross at 6:00 p.m. The Friars return to Providence, R.I. to host Merrimack in their home opener at Lennon Family Field on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Noon.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE (1-0):
• Providence enters the weekend with a 1-0 record, having defeated Boston University, 3-2, in a shootout on Aug. 29 in Boston, Mass.
• Sophomores Piper Cline and Johanna Mahner each scored a goal in regulation. It marked the first career goal for each player.
Carly van Benten registered two assists in the match against BU. It marked her first career multi-assist game.
• For the sixth-consecutive season, a member of the Porter family started for the Friars at goalkeeper. Asia Porter, who played the previous five season in goal, yielded the starting job in the season opener to her sister, Ava Porter
• Porter earned her first collegiate victory at Boston University. She recorded 11 saves in 80 minutes of action, spanning regulation and two overtimes. She went on to make three saves in the shootout to backstop Providence to victory.
• Porter earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors on Sept. 2.
• Junior Florencia Talarico's shootout goal at Boston University was featured at No. 2 on ESPN's SportsCenter Top-10 plays. Talarico was one of three Friars to score in the shootout, giving Providence a 3-1 advantage to.
• Fellow juniors Macie Pennisi and Charlotte Lorden also converted their attempts in the shootout.
• Junior midfielder Bo Martina and Pennisi were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Martina was one of three unanimous selections to the 13-player team. The duo finished in the top three on the team in scoring last season.
• Martina earned All-BIG EAST First Team and NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region First-Team honors in 2024. She played all 17 games with 16 appearances in the starting line-up. She led the Friars in points (18) and assists (eight) and added five goals. Nine of her 18 points came during BIG EAST regular-season action on three goals and three assists. Martina was a three-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection in 2024.
• Pennisi started all 17 games for the Friars in 2024 and finished third on the team in scoring (12 points) on five goals and two assists. She established single-season career highs in goals and points. She was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24, 2024 and was featured on the NFHCA Division I Watch List ahead of last season.
• The Friars lost 11 players to graduation last season, including six seniors and five graduate students. 
• Providence returns 13 players from last year's team, which features two seniors, seven juniors and four sophomores. Eight freshmen have joined the roster in 2025.
• The Friars' match against Merrimack kicks off a seven-game home stand at Lennon Family Field.
• Providence College finished the 2024 season with a 7-10 overall record.
• The Friars posted a 3-4 mark in the BIG EAST Conference and finished sixth in the league's final standings. 
• Three of the Friars' four losses in league play were decided by one goal at the hands of No. 14 Liberty (2-1), No. 20 Temple (1-0) and Villanova (3-2).
• Providence was picked to finish sixth in the 2025 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
 
SCOUTING HOLY CROSS (1-1):
• Holy Cross enters the weekend with a 1-1 record.
• The Crusaders finished the 2024 season with a 7-10 overall record (0-6 Patriot League) and were picked to finish sixth in the 2025 Patriot League Preseason Poll. 
• The Crusaders dropped their season opener to Quinnipiac, 2-1, on Aug. 29. Maguire Sturgis gave Holy Cross a 1-0 lead at the 11:45 mark, but Quinnipiac answered with two goals at 13:35 and 38:55 to seal the win. Francisca Eschoyez was credited with both goals. Quinnipiac held a 18-12 advantage in shots during the game, and Holy Cross held a 8-5 edge in penalty corners.
• Holy Cross earned a 7-0 win over Merrimack on Aug. 31. Six different Crusaders scored in the game. Sturgis led the way with two goals.
• The Crusaders used a 33-6 advantage in shots and a 14-1 edge in offensive corners.
• Sturgis, a preseason All-Patriot League honoree, leads the offense through two games, having recorded eight points on three goals and two assists.
• Mia McCloskey has started both games in goal for Holy Cross. She owns a 0.882 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average.
 
SCOUTING MERRIMACK (0-2):
• Merrimack enters the weekend with an 0-2 record.
• The Warriors dropped their first two games of the season to UMass Lowell (6-0) and Holy Cross (7-0) last weekend.
• Merrimack has been outshot by its opponents, 41-8, through two games. The Warriors' opponents also have held the advantage in penalty corners, 25-2.
• Isabelle Gardiner has started both games in goal for Merrimack. She recorded 15+ saves in each match, for a total of 36 saves overall.
• Merrimack is coming off a 1-16 season in 2024. Its lone victory came against Mercyhurst, 2-0, in the regular-season finale.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence will remain home at Lennon Family Field for six-consecutive matches. The Friars are scheduled to host Bryant on Friday, Sept. 12 at 3:00 p.m. and New Hampshire on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 12:00 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on Friars Live.
