Field Hockey Set To Open 2026 Season With A Pair Of Matches Against Boston College And Boston University

Friars begin season on the road at BC on Friday, Aug. 28 before hosting Boston University on Sunday, Aug. 30 at Noon.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will open the 2026 regular-season schedule this weekend with a pair of non-conference games against Boston College and Boston University. The Friars travel to Newton, Mass. on Friday, Aug. 28 to face the Eagles at 3:00 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ACCNX. Providence will return to Lennon Family Field to host Boston University for its home opener on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 12:00 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ (an international stream also will be available via Friars Live).

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (0-0):
• Providence College is coming off a 8-9 season in 2025.
• Four of the Friars nine losses were decided by one goal, including three in overtime.
• The Friars return 97-percent of their offensive production from last season, accounting for 35 of the team's 36 goals and 30 of the team's 31 assists in 2025.
• Seniors Bo Martina and Lily Procaccianti each eclipsed the 20-point mark last season. Martina finished with 22 points on nine goals and four assists, while Procaccianti paced Providence with 10 goals and added one assist for 21 points.
• Procaccianti is the first player to record 10-or-more goals in a season since 2014. That year, Daniella Bernasconi (15), Megan Hamilton (15) and Steph Guglielmo (13) all recorded double-digit goals.
• Fellow senior Carly van Benten finished third on the team in scoring with 18 points on five goals and a team-best eight assists.
• Martina was named Preseason BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year on Aug. 19. She also was a unanimous selection on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
• Van Benten joined Martina on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
• Last season, Martina claimed All-BIG EAST First-Team honors and was named BIG EAST Co-Midfielder of the Year. She is the first player in program history to earn BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year honors and is one of 12 players in program history to be named to the first team in multiple seasons (2024, 2025).
• Van Benten earned All-BIG EAST Second-Team honors in 2025.
• Sophomore Ava Porter is the lone returning goalkeeper for the Friars in 2026 and will be joined by graduate transfer Pauline Gineste, who spent the previous four seasons at American.
• As a freshman, Porter started 16 games for the Friars and posted an 8-8 record with two shut-out victories. She registered a 1.64 goals against average and a 0.748 save percentage.
• Gineste started 17 games last season for the Eagles and posted a 10-5 overall record, including a 6-0 mark in the Patriot League. She registered four shut-out victories, a 1.14 goals against average and a 0.767 save percentage.
SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE (0-0):
• The Eagles are coming off a 6-10 season in 2025, including a 1-7 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Boston College posted a 5-3 mark in non-conference play last season.
• Boston College was picked to finish sixth of nine teams in the 2026 ACC Field Hockey Preseason Coaches' Poll.
• Graduate midfielder Milou Klein was named to the All-ACC Preseason Team on Aug. 14. Klein joins the Eagles for her first season at BC in 2026. She attended Maerlant-Lyceum in The Hague and served as captain of the HDM national team.
• The Eagles return 15 players from last year's squad, including five of their top six scorers.
• Madelieve Drion tallied a team-best 11 points last season on five goals and one assist. Alex de Cain is the only other player on the roster to have recorded double-digit points. She finished the 2025 season with 10 points on four goals and two assists.
• Charlotte Kramer is the lone returning goalkeeper for Boston College. She played 13 games last season and compiled a 4-7 record. She registered a 1.40 goals against average and a 0.729 save percentage.
SCOUTING BOSTON UNIVERSITY (0-0):
• The Terriers will open the season against Merrimack on Friday, Aug. 28 before making their way to Providence to face the Friars.
• Head Coach Sarah Shute begins her first season on the sidelines at BU, succeeding Sally Starr, who retired in December after a 45-season tenure. Shute was on Starr's staff for 10 seasons (2010-2019) and spent the previous six years as the head field hockey coach at MIT. Shute graduated from BU in 2008.
• Boston University was picked to finish third in the Patriot League, behind American and Lafayette.
• The Terriers finished the 2025 campaign with an 8-11 overall record, including a 3-3 mark in the Patriot League.
• Boston University claimed the Patriot League Tournament title and punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament Opening Round by upsetting top-seeded American, 1-0, in the semifinals and No. 2 seed Lafayette in the championship game, 3-2.
• The Terriers fell to Fairfield in the NCAA Tournament, 1-0.
• Nicole Lauro and Caroline O'Brien received Preseason All-Patriot League honors.
• O'Brien is the reigning Patriot League Championship MVP after becoming the first player to ever record a hat trick in the Patriot League title game. She was an All-Patriot League First Team and NFHCA All-Region Second Team honoree in 2025.
• In 2025, O'Brien paced the Terriers in points (37), goals (15), assists (seven) and shots (64).
• Boston University also returns its primary goalkeeper from last season in Sophie Ortyl. She started 17 games and logged a total of 998 minutes of action in the cage. She recorded a 2.53 goals against average and a 0.641 save percentage to go along with three shut-out victories.
• Lisa McNamara, who played five seasons at Providence College (2019-2023), is an assistant coach on BU's staff. McNamara played 77 games for the Friars with 56 appearances in the starting line-up. She finished her career with 36 points on 10 goals and 16 assists.
