Boston College Spoils Friars' Season Opener With Late Fourth-Quarter Goal

Freshman Rhylee Givens scored her first career goal.

NEWTON, Mass. – Providence College and Boston College squared off in the 2026 season opener on Friday, Aug. 28 in Newton, Mass. The two teams went into the fourth quarter deadlocked in a scoreless draw before BC claimed a 3-1 win. The game was tied, 1-1, late in the fourth until the Eagles scored the go-ahead goal with 3:01 to play. BC added an insurance goal with an empty netter at 56:57 to seal the win.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The first quarter was scoreless (0-0).
• Both teams registered one shot each.
Charlotte Lorden was credited with the Friars' lone shot, on a back-handed effort from the left side of the circle.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Ava Porter started in the cage and made one save in the first quarter.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The match was deadlocked in a scoreless draw at halftime, 0-0.
• The Friars played a man-up for two minutes late in the third quarter, but were unable to generate a scoring opportunity.
• Boston College registered the only shot of the quarter at the 22:57 mark, but it was deflected wide into the side netting of the cage. 
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence logged the only shot attempt of the third quarter.
Johanna Mahner worked the ball into the top of the circle with 5:52 to play in the frame. It resulted in a shot by Lily Procaccianti, but the attempt was turned away by the Eagles' goalkeeper.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Boston College took a 1-0 lead at the 48:00 mark as Alexandra De Cain converted on a penalty corner. The goal was assisted by Ike Jakobsen and Madelieve Drion.
• A minute later, Boston College was assessed a yellow card, giving the Friars a man advantage for the next five minutes.
• With 7:12 to play, Providence was successful in a video review, which resulted in its first penalty corner of the game.
• During the ensuring penalty corner, a penalty stroke was called.
• Freshman Rhylee Givens converted the opportunity for her first collegiate goal, tying the game, 1-1, at the 53:00 mark.
• BC regained the lead with 3:01 to play as Klara Mueffelmann picked up a loose ball on the doorstep of the cage and scored for a 2-1 advantage.
• The Friars pulled their goalkeeper in favor of an extra attacker and the Eagles were able to seal the win with an insurance goal at 58:04.
• Boston College held a 6-3 edge in shots during the fourth quarter.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• The Eagles finished the game with a 8-5 edge in shot attempts, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
• The Eagles held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners.
• Porter played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded three saves.
• Charlotte Kramer recorded two saves for Boston College.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return home to Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. to host Boston University on Sunday, Aug. 30 at Noon. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
