PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated Merrimack, 7-0, in its home opener at Lennon Family Field on Sunday, Sept. 7. The Friars improved to 3-0 on the season, while Merrimack dropped to 0-3.
GAME FLOW:

Lily Procaccianti scored the Friars' first goal of the day (1-0) at the 12:28 mark as she touched in a feed from
Carly van Benten.
• Moments later, Van Benten connected on her first goal of the season off a pass from
Piper Cline. Van Benten's goal came with 34-seconds left in the quarter.
• After a scoreless second quarter, the Friars carried their two-goal lead into halftime.
• At the break, Providence led in shots (15-1), shots on goal (11-1) and penalty corners (5-1).

Bo Martina scored her first goal of the season at the 35:02 mark on a penalty corner option. She was assisted by Johanna Mahner. Martina's tally made it a 3-0 game.
• Procaccianti netted her second goal of the afternoon on a penalty corner. She deflected the ball into the cage at the right post off a pass from
Macie Pennisi. The goal came at 39:33.
• Martina charged the cage after feeding the ball into the circler and knocked home a loose ball for her second goal of the day, unassisted, at 44:16. Providence took a 5-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
• Freshman
Ari Ftorek scored her first career goal 48:05 into the game to give Providence a 6-0 lead. She scored off a direct shot on a corner, assisted by Mahner and
Martu Torre Festa.

Lilia Payne added an insurance goal with three-seconds left in the game, marking her first career goal. She was assisted by Cline.

NOTES:
• Providence starts the season 3-0 for the first time since 2006.
• Van Benten recorded a career-high three points in the game on one goal and one assist.
• Procaccianti has scored three goals in the last two games, combined. Her two goals vs. Merrimack marked the second multi-goal game of her career.
• Martina also registered the second multi-goal game of her career (two).
• Cline and Mahner each recorded the first multi-assist games of their career, with two each.
• Ftorek and Payne both scored their first collegiate goals in the contest.
• Torre Festa's assist in the fourth quarter marked her first career point.

Ava Porter played 45 minutes in goal and earned the win for Providence to improve to 3-0. She recorded one save on the afternoon.

Zoe Onken entered the game for Porter at the start of the fourth quarter and played 15 minutes.
• Merrimack goalkeeper, Isabelle Gardiner, collected 16 saves for the Warriors.
• Providence led the game in shots (31-2), shots on goal (23-1) and penalty corners (13-1).

• The Friars will host a pair of non-conference opponents next weekend at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. On Friday, Sept. 12, Providence will face Bryant at 3:00 p.m. New Hampshire comes to town on Sunday, Sept. 14 for a Noon start.
