VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Providence College women's track team competed on Day 1 at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, March 14. The Championships are being held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va.
The Friar DMR team of graduate student
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) 1200 meters, junior
Jill Fenerty (Franklin, Mass.) 400 meters, sophomore
Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) 800 meters, and senior
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) 1600 meters, placed third of 12 teams in a time of 10:46.28. The Friars finished less than a second behind the first-place team, BYU (10:45.34). The top four teams (BYU, Oregon, Providence, and LSU) beat the previous championship record time. For their efforts, all four Friar women earned First Team All-America honors.
Also running on Friday, graduate student
Alex Millard (Kent, England) competed in the 5,000 meters and placed 12
th in a time of 15:34.36. With her finish, Millard received Second Team All-America accolades.
The Friars will return to action on Saturday as Flockhart and May will race in the 3,000 meters at 4 p.m. May is seeded eighth with a time of 8:44.73, while Flockhart is ninth at 8:45.67. Flockhart recorded her time at the Boston University Season Opener on Dec. 7, while May established her time at the Boston University Terrier Classic on Jan. 31. May's mark is both a personal best and a program record, while Flockhart's time ranks second in school history.
