CHICAGO, Ill. – The Providence College men's and women's track teams competed on the first day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 28 at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track and Field Facility in Chicago, Ill. The Friar women's DMR team of graduate student
Shannon Flockhart (Cambridge, England), graduate student
Alex Millard (Kent, England), senior
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) and junior
Jill Fenerty (Franklin, Mass.) captured the distance medley relay in a BIG EAST Championship record time of 10:54.78, which was 30 seconds faster than Villanova (second-place, 11:24.25). It marks the second consecutive year the Friar women won the BIG EAST DMR.
On the women's side, graduate student
Shannon Flockhart (Cambridge, England) competed in the mile trials, finishing second overall (4:48.29) and qualifying for the finals on Saturday. Also running the mile trials was junior
Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) (fifth, 4:45.62) and sophomore
Kiera Hall (Christchurch, New Zealand) (11
th, 4:51.13) who both qualified for the finals on Saturday.
Sophomore
Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) had a successful 800-meter race in the preliminary rounds today, running a time of 2:08.87. O'Neill finished third overall (second in her heat) and qualified for the finals on Saturday.
On the men's side, the DMR team of graduate student
Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia), junior
Kyle Bloomer (Darien, Conn.), freshman
Thomas Breen (Providence, R.I.) and freshman
Cormac Dixon (Dublin, Ireland) placed third in a time of 9:47.18.
Graduate student
Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) competed in the finals of the 5,000 meters (eighth, 14:22.05). Senior
Brett Lehman (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) had an impressive race in the 400-meter trials, placing third overall (47.81) and qualifying for the finals on Saturday.
In the 800 meter trials, graduate student
Josh Lewin (West Chester, Pa.) (eighth, 1:51.78) qualified for finals on Saturday.
In the men's mile, sophomore William Johnston (Auckland, New Zealand) and
Tyler Bartlett (Fairfield, Conn.) both qualified for the finals in the mile on Saturday. Johnston placed fifth overall (4:08.86) and Bartlett was 10
th (4:09.67).
