Men’s Lacrosse Defeated By No. 6 Denver In BIG EAST Play, 7-4

Richie Joseph had a team-high two goals.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 6 Denver, 7-4, in BIG EAST action in Providence, R.I. on April 20. The Friars dropped to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST, while Denver improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the BIG EAST. Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) paced the Friars' offense with two goals. 
  
1st Quarter: 

- Providence held a 1-0 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.
- The game was scoreless through the opening 12 minutes before Richie Joseph found the back of the net to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.
- Denver led in shots (8-6) and faceoffs won (2-0) in the first quarter.
 
  
2nd Quarter: 

- The Pioneers outscored the Friars, 3-0, in the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead in the game.
- Denver scored back-to-back goals in the first six minutes of the second quarter to take the 2-1 lead.
- The Pioneers extended their run to 3-0 and take the two-goal lead with 3:35 remaining in the second quarter.
- The remainder of the quarter was scoreless.
- Denver outshot Providence, 13-5 in the second quarter.

3rd Quarter: 
- The teams exchanged goals during the third quarter as Denver claimed a 5-3 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
- Michael Chabra (Reading, Mass.) opened the third quarter with his first goal of the game before the Pioneers answered with a goal of their own.
- Chris Cusoltio (Melrose, Mass.) scored his first goal of the game with 40-seconds remaining in the quarter. Denver answered with two seconds left in the quarter, to make it a 5-3 game. 
- The Friars held an 8-7 advantage in shots during the third frame.
 
4th Quarter    
- The Pioneers outscored the Friars, 2-1, in the fourth quarter. 
- Joseph scored his second goal of the game with 10:05 remaining in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to one (5-4). 
- Denver closed the game with two unanswered goals to earn the 7-4 win.
 
 
Notes:    
- Joseph led the Frairs' offense with two points on two goals.
- James Corasaniti (New York, N.Y.) made nine saves in goal.
- Denver led in shots (38-28), shots on goal (16-14), groundballs (32-25) and faceoffs won (11-3)
- Ryan Bell has recorded 39 assists this season, which is three shy of the single season record set by Kyle Ojakian in 2002. Ojakian set the single-season mark with 42 assists. His 56 points is seven points shy of the single-season record for points, which also was set by Ojakian (63). 
- The Friars can clinch a BIG EAST Championship berth with a win over St. John's on Friday, April 26. 
 
What's Next: The Friars will travel to Queens, N.Y. for their final regular season game on Friday, April 26 to face St. John's. Faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
