Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Stony Brook, 13-12, In Overtime

Chris Cusolito scored the game-winning goal in overtime for the Friars.

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Stony Brook, 13-12, in overtime on Saturday, Mach 9 in Stony Brook, N.Y. The Friars improved to 4-3 while the Seawolves dropped to 3-4. Ryan Bell paced the Friars' offense with five points on two goals and three assists. Chris Cusoltio scored the game-winning goal for Providence.


1st Quarter: 

Six different Friars scored in the first quarter.

- Luke Jaber (Milton, Mass.) and Rhett Chamber (Larchmont, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals in the first four minutes of the quarter before Stony Brook answered with a goal of their own.

- The Friars went on a 4-0 run to end the first quarter and take a 6-1 lead. Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.), Michael Chabra (Reading, Mass.), Ryan Bell (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Jack Horrigan (Lutherville, Md.) each contributed a goal.

- James Corasaniti (New York, N.Y.) made four saves in the first quarter.


2nd Quarter: 

- Providence was held scoreless the first 13 minutes of the quarter.

- Stony Brook scored six unanswered goals to take a 7-6 lead.

- Chabra scored his second goal of the game off a feed from Bell to tie the game at 7-7 going into halftime.

- The Friars went 4-7 at the faceoff in the second quarter.

 
3rd Quarter: 

- Each team exchanged a pair of goals in the third quarter.

- Chris Cusolito (Melrose, Mass.) scored the first goal of the second half before Stony Brook answered less than a minute later to tie the game at 8-8.

- Stony Brook scored with 3:32 left in the quarter to take a 9-8 lead.

- Cusolito scored his second goal of the game to make it 9-9 with 13 seconds left in the quarter.

- The Friars outshot the Seawolves, 11-6, in the third quarter.

 

4th Quarter 

- The Seawolves started the fourth quarter on a 3-0 run to take a 12-9 lead.

- Horrigan scored with 4:33 remaining in the quarter to cut the score to 12-10. Bell earned his third assist of the day on the goal.

- Jospeh and Bell scored back-to-back goals in the final minute of the quarter to force overtime. 

- The Friars led in shots (19-7) and faceoffs (4-3) in the fourth quarter.

Overtime

- Cusoltio scored an unassisted goal 1:56 into overtime to win the game for the Friars.

Notes: 

- Bell had a team-high three assists. His three assists move him into second place on the Friars' all-time career assist list, with 97. Matt Pymm '99 is the current leader with 102 all-time assists.

- Cusoltio recorded his third hattrick of the season.

- Providence led in shots (55-31), shots on goal (32-22) and caused turnovers (10-3).

- Joseph extends his goal streak to nine games.

- Corasaniti made 10 saves.

- This win marks the second time Providence has defeated Stony Brook. The last win was in their most recent meeting in 2023 when the Friars defeated the Seawolves, 10-9, in overtime.

What's Next: The Friars travel to Durham, N.C. to face Duke on Wednesday, March 13. Faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
