On October 6, 1979, the Providence College men's cross country team defeated six other schools to capture the first  BIG EAST title as the conference held its first ever championship in any sport at Franklin Park in Boston. Forty-five years later, the Friar men's squad has captured 15 BIG EAST cross country titles, including six of the first seven beginning in 1979.
On October 6, 1979, the Friars were led by sophomore
Ray Treacy who finished second overall in a time of 23:53.9 behind Georgetown's John Gregorek (23:35.8). Other PC runners to finish in the top-10 were James Fallon (fifth, 24:17.8) and Peter Crooke (sixth, 24:18.7). PC's Dave Ball (11
th) and freshman Paul Maloney (12
th) rounded out the scoring for the Friars.
The Friars scored 36 points to defeat Georgetown (48 points), St. John's (65 points), Syracuse (94 points), Connecticut (118 points), Boston College (139 points) and Seton Hall (224 points).
"The guys ran a very smart race," Providence College Head Coach Bob Amato said to the Providence College Cowl reporter following the race. "Georgetown is a well-balanced team and it took fine performances from every member of the team to defeat them."
