Providence College Cross Country Marks 30 And 25 Years Since Historic NCAA Titles

The women’s cross-country team captured the College's first NCAA team title in 1995 and Keith Kelly captured an individual NCAA Championships in 2000 on the men's side.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's cross country team captured the College's first NCAA Championship title 30 years ago today [Nov. 20]. On the men's side, Keith Kelly won the program's first individual NCAA Championship today [Nov. 20] 25 years ago today during the 2000 season. 

The 1995 women's cross country team did not lose a meet that season. The squad finished first at prominent meets, including the University of Minnesota NIKE Invitational, Paul Short Invitational, BIG EAST Championship, ECAC Championship and NCAA Championship. The Friars beat Villanova in the BIG EAST, ECAC and NCAA Championships, handing the Wildcats their first losses in six years. The Friars entered the season ranked 19th in the nation. They climbed the polls and reached No. 1 on November 13,1995. Marie McMahon, Maria McCambridge, Susan Murnane and Moira Harrington earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championship in Ames, Iowa for finishing fourth, sixth, 13th and 25th respectively. Krissy Haacke was the fifth Friar to cross the line in 40th. The Friars won the meet (88 points), beating second-place Colorado (123 points). Meghan McCarthy and Gladys Ganiel rounded off the 1995 women's cross-country championship team.

Kelly captured the first NCAA individual title for the cross country program en route to winning in Ames, Iowa in 2000. Kelly outkicked Fairleigh Dickinson's Stephen Ondiecki and Alabama's David Kimani at the finish to earn the win with a time of 30:14.5. The men's cross country team finished third at the NCAA Cross Country Championship that year.
