Men’s Soccer Resumes BIG EAST Play With Road Game At Marquette

The Friars will travel to Milwaukee, Wis., to play the Golden Eagles on Oct. 12.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College men's soccer team (6-4-2, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) is set to play in a conference matchup against BIG EAST Midwest Division foe, Marquette (6-4-2, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday, Oct. 12 in Milwaukee, Wis. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. (ET) and will stream on FloSports.

All-Time Series: Friars lead, 10-4-4
 
The last time the Friars played Marquette on its home turf was in 2021, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
 
SCOUTING THE FRIARS
Providence enters the week with a 6-4-2 overall record including a 1-1-1 mark in BIG EAST Play. The Friars are coming off a 2-1 loss against Syracuse on Oct. 8.
 
Junior Bruno Rosa (Cascais, Portugal), leads Providence in points (12), goals (four) and assists (four). Rosa notched a career-best two goals in the Friars' 2-2 draw against Creighton on September 29. He scored a last-minute goal with just four seconds remaining in regulation time.
 
Goalkeeper Lukas Burns (Cinnaminson, N.J.) has appeared in all 12 games for the Friars. Burns currently boasts a 0.702 save percentage and a 1.17 goals against average. Burns was deemed the 2024 BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year earlier this season.
 
Freshman Steban Lopera (Revere, Mass.) made his career debut at Georgetown on Oct.4. Lopera recorded 34 minutes in the match against Syracuse (Oct. 8), and scored the lone goal of the game for the Friars which marked the first of his career.
 
Thirteen of the 14 Friar goals this season have come from transfer students. Transfers Pepe Lora (Madrid, Spain), Rosa, Harry Scarborough (Wigan, England), Aidan Davock (Medway, Mass.), Rodrigo Vaza (Torres Vedras, Portugal), and Kevin Castañeda (Providence, R.I.) have all recorded goals this season.
 
The Friars are currently receiving five votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll. They previously held the No. 18 ranking on September 24 and the No.21 ranking on October 1.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Marquette enters game play with a 6-4-2 overall record including a 2-1-0 mark in BIG EAST play. Last week, the Golden Eagles suffered a 1-0 loss against then No.15 Seton Hall on Oct. 4. They tied Milwaukee, 1-1, on Oct. 8.
 
Mitar Mitrovic leads the team with 11 points on five goals and one assist. Mitrovic is currently third in the BIG EAST with goals and leads the conference with game-winning goals (three). Mitchell Dryden and Justin Milovanov closely follow suit with three goals each.
 
Nine players each have recorded at least one goal for the Golden Eagles.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Marten Brink has made a strong impact in his first season for Marquette. He currently ranks second in the BIG EAST for total saves (39), third in saves per game (3.90), and fourth in both goals-against average (0.90) and total shutouts (four).
 
UP NEXT…
The Friars will host St. John's (4-5-3, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday, Oct.19 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The match will begin at 12:00 p.m. and stream on the BIG EAST Network.
 
The Johnnies hold a 20-11-5 all-time series edge over the Friars. Providence and St. John's faced off last season in Queens, N.Y., with the match ending in a scoreless draw. The Friars last defeated the Red Storm at home in 2019 with a 2-0 victory.
