OMAHA, NEB. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 22/21 Creighton, 81-70, on Jan. 14 at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb. The Bluejays used a strong second quarter to build a cushion at halftime. The Friars were unable to close the gap as the teams were even in the second half (39-39). Providence fell to 8-10 overall (2-3 BIG EAST), while Creighton improved to 13-3 (4-2 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence led 7-5 at the first media timeout after starting the game 3-5 from the field (.600).
• Creighton used a 6-0 run during a span of 1:06 to take a 16-15 lead with 1:27 on the clock.
• Providence closed the quarter with five-unanswered points to take a 20-16 advantage into the break.
• The Friars shot 57.1-percent from the field in the opening 10 minutes (8-14), including a 4-8 performance from beyond arc (.500).
• Six of the eight Friars who saw action in the first quarter scored at least one bucket, led by Brynn Farrell's five points.
2ND QUARTER:
• Creighton used a 10-0 run to take a 28-24 lead and force a Friar timeout with 5:24 on the clock.
• Providence cut the deficit to one on two occasions, but Creighton closed the quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 42-31 lead at halftime.
• Grace Efosa paced the Friars with eight points in the first half, while three Bluejays scored in double figures.
3RD QUARTER:
• Creighton outscored the Friars 14-8 heading into the media timeout (4:35) to take a 56-39 lead.
• A 12-2 spurt helped the Friars cut the deficit to single digits (58-49) with 56-seconds on the clock.
• Creighton scored four unanswered to close the quarter (62-49).
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence cut the deficit to 11 a string of four-straight free-throws by the Bluejays pushed the lead back to 15 with 4:32 to play.
• Emily Archibald hit back-to-back threes for the Friars to cut the deficit to 12 each time, but Creighton matched her on the offensive end each time.
• Providence outscored the Bluejays 21-19 in the fourth quarter.
NOTES:
• Olsen registered her league-best seventh double-double on 18 points and 11 boards.
• Efosa (14) and Farrell (10) also reached double figures in the scoring column.
• Poor free-throw shooting hurt the Friars as they converted just 12-of-24 attempts at the stripe.
• The Friars dominated the glass, 44-28.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 17 against Georgetown. The game will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to tipoff at 7:00 p.m.
