DENVER, Colo. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 10 Denver, 13-6, on Friday, Apr. 21 on the road. The Friars dropped to 5-8 overall (1-3 BIG EAST) in the 2023 season while the Pioneers improved to 8-4 (3-1 BIG EAST).
1st Quarter:
- Providence got on the board at the 13:22 mark when Ryan Bell turned and scored for the 1-0 lead.
- Denver scored just a minute later to tie things up, however, Providence responded at 11:34 as Matt Grillo converted on an assist from Chris Simonton from behind the cage (2-1).
- Denver scored four goals to close the quarter and take the 6-2 lead.
- Tom Fegley won five of the nine face-off opportunities of the quarter.
2nd Quarter:
- The Pioneers scored two unanswered goals to mount a six-point lead going into half (8-2).
- Both teams got seven shots off, Providence had two land on goal.
3rd Quarter:
- The Friars opened the second half much like the first, scoring two quick goals.
- Patrick McAleavey scored at the 11:28 mark off the assist from Bell to end the Friars' 30-minute scoring drought (3-8).
- Jack Horrigan found Grillo at 10:22 for a goal from deep to cut into Denver's lead (4-8).
- After two Pioneer goals, Bell scored on a man-up attempt with the help of Richie Joseph with 4:38 remaining in the quarter (5-10).
4th Quarter:
- The Pioneers outscored the Friars 3-1 in the final frame to claim the 13-6 victory.
- Michael Chabra scored the lone goal of the quarter for Providence.
Notes:
- Bell led the Friars with three points on two goals and one assist. He is now one point away from the 100 career-point milestone.
WHAT'S NEXT… The Friars will face St. John's on Apr. 29 to close out the regular-season schedule. Opening face-off is set for 12:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Prior to the start of the game, a Senior Day ceremony will be held to recognize the program's seniors and graduate members.
