Providence Men’s Lacrosse Tops St. John’s In Overtime, 12-11

Ryan Bell recorded his 100th career-point in the game.

 – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated St. John's, 12-11, on Saturday, Apr. 29 in the final game of the regular-season. The Friars improved to 6-8 (2-3 BIG EAST) in the 2023 season while the Red Storm dropped to 0-14 (0-5 BIG EAST). Today's victory allowed Providence to clinch the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST and earn a spot in the 2023 BIG EAST Tournament.

1st Quarter:
  • St. John's scored four-straight goals in the first nine minutes of regulation for an early four-goal lead (4-0).
  • The Friars responded with two goals to end the quarter down by two (4-2).
  • Michael Chabra put the Friars on the board with a goal at 6:01 (1-4).
  • Ryan Bell followed, scoring off an assist from Patrick McAleavey, with 4:26 remaining in the quarter(2-4). This goal marked Bell's 100th career-point.
  • Quinn McConnaughey won six of the seven face-off opportunities of the quarter.

2nd Quarter:
  • Chabra opened second-quarter scoring with a goal less than a minute in, at 14:15. He was assisted by Richie Joseph (3-4).
  • The Friars then answered two Red Storm goals with three goals of their own and outscored St. John's 4-1 in the final seven minutes of the half.
  • Matt Grillo started the Providence run by scoring on a man-up attempt off an assist from Joseph with 6:49 remaining (4-6).
  • Joseph collected his second-straight assist after he helped Chabra find the back of the net for his third goal of the day at the 3:16 mark (5-6).
  • Joseph got his name in the scoring column with 1:49 remaining in the half on a man-up goal assisted by Bell (6-6).
  • After a goal by St. John's Caleb Zuhoaki, John Hoffman tied the game at 7-7 with a goal, which was assisted by Bell with seven minutes left in the half.
  • Providence continued to dominate the faceoff, winning 12 of the 16 opportunities of the half.
  • The Friars outshot the Red Storm 19-7 (5-3 on goal).

3rd Quarter:
  • The teams traded goals throughout the third frame until Providence scored two-straight to head into the fourth ahead by one (10-9).
  • After a goal by St. John's to open the quarter (7-8), Jack Horrigan scored his first of the day off an assist from Bell at the 12:25 mark (8-8).
  • Horrigan responded to another Red Storm goal, with 6:44 remaining, by scoring for the second time today, this time, with the help of Hoffman (9-9).
  • Chabra scored with 1:57 remaining to give the Friars their first lead of the day (10-9).
  • Providence took 13 shots, seven of which were on goal.
 
4th Quarter:
  • St. John's scored at 9:43 to bring the game to its fifth tie of the day (10-10).
  • Chabra fired and scored with 8:03 remaining to give the Friars the 11-10 edge. He was assisted by McAleavey.
  • Providence led by one for the next seven minutes until Brian Kelly scored for St. John's at the 1:15 mark to take the game into overtime (11-11).
Overtime:
  • Grillo scored the game winner with :51 on the clock to give the Friars an overtime victory (12-11).

Notes:
  • Chabra led the Friars with five points on five goals.
  • Bell and Joseph added four points apiece, each collecting one goal and three assists.
  • Bell's goal in the first quarter marked his 100th career-point.
  • This victory clinched Providence as the No. 4 seed and earned the Friars a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament.
 
 
WHAT'S NEXT… The Friars will travel to Milwaukee, Wis. next week to face first-seeded Georgetown on Thursday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. (ET) in the BIG EAST Semifinals. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
