Men's Lacrosse Defeats Marquette, 16-14, In BIG EAST Home Opener

Matt Grillo earned his first hat-trick of the season, scoring a game and season-high five goals.

Providence, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team earned a 16-14 victory over Marquette in its BIG EAST home opener on Saturday, Apr. 1. The Friars improved to 5-5 overall (1-0 BIG EAST), while the Marquette dropped to 5-4 (0-1 BIG EAST).

1st Quarter:
  • Marquette scored the first goal of the game, just 52-seconds into the action.
  • Providence held the Golden Eagles scoreless the remainder of the quarter, while scoring five-straight goals to take a 5-1 lead at the break.
  • Michael Chabra put the Friars on the board from deep at the 13:09 mark, assisted by Jack Horrigan.
  • Matt Grillo gave Providence the 2-1 lead at the 9:51 mark, assisted by Ryan Bell.
  • Stephen Markowski gave the Friars their third goal in the first quarter, unassisted, off a good clear attempt at the 8:41 mark.
  • Bell recorded his second assist of the day as he fed Ty Thureson at the 6:13 mark.
  • Albert Paniccia closed the scoring on an unassisted goal with three-seconds left.
  • Providence outshot Marquette 9-7 and won 4-6 face-off opportunities.

2nd Quarter:
  • The Golden Eagles scored one to open the quarter, but Grillo converted on a man-up opportunity at the 13:36 mark, assisted by Bell (6-2).
  • Richie Joseph netted his first goal of the day at the 12:43 mark with another assist from Bell to take a five-goal lead (7-2).
  • Marquette scored four of the next five goals in the game to close the quarter.
  • Grillo halted a 3-0 run by Marquette with his third goal of the day and earned his first hat trick of the season at 8:36 mark. He was assisted John Hoffman.
  • At the half, Providence held the lead over Marquette (8-6), while Marquette claimed an advantage in shots 15-10 and face-offs 6-3.
 
3rd Quarter:
  • Chabra and Paniccia scored back-to-back goals to open the first 1:03 of the third quarter (10-6).
  • The Golden Eagles scored consecutive goals close the deficit to 10-8.
  • Horrigan found the top left corner of the net at the 5:29 mark to extend the Friars' lead to 11-8.
  • From that point, the teams traded goals to close the quarter, and Providence went into the final 15 minutes of play with a 13-11 lead.
  • Joseph and Quinn McConnaughey each scored during the final 2:45 of the third. McConaughey's goal marked his first of the season.
  • The Friars won 5-6 face-off opportunities of the third.
 
4th Quarter:
  • Providence scored the first two goals of the fourth to take a 15-11 advantage.
  • Will Ferraro scored at the 10:37 mark and Grillo tallied his fourth goal of the game at the 9:48 mark off an assist from Bell.
  • Marquette answered with 7:55 left on the clock to get within three (15-12).
  • Grillo responded with a diving goal with 3:24 remaining to give the Friars a 16-12 advantage.
  • Marquette scored two goals in the final three minutes of regulation, but Providence held on for the 16-14 lead.

Notes:
  • Behind only Ed Loiselle '92, Grillo ranks second all-time at Providence in career-goals, with 115.
  • Grillo earned his first hat-trick of the season, scoring a game and season-high five goals.
  • Bell finished the game with five assists.
  • Goalkeeper James Corasaniti earned the win for Providence with 19 saves and a .576 save percentage.
  • Overall, Marquette outshot Providence 53-38, but the Friars led wire-to-wire for the 16-14 BIG EAST home-opener victory.
  • This marks Providence's first victory over Marquette since the 2019 season.
 
WHAT'S NEXT… The Friars will travel to Washington D.C. to face BIG EAST foe Georgetown University on Saturday, Apr. 8. Opening face-off is set for 12:00 p.m.
