Men's Lacrosse Defeats Fairfield, 17-10

Michael Chabra and Richie Joseph each recorded hat tricks in the victory.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team earned a 17-10 victory over Fairfield on Saturday, Mar. 4. Providence improved to 3-3 on the season, while Fairfield dropped to 2-3.
 
1st Quarter:
  • Aside from Fairfield's opening goal at 14:07, Providence was able to obtain a shutout throughout the rest of the first quarter.
  • Michael Chabra put the Friars on the board, with the assist from Ryan Bell, at the 9:23 mark. Chabra followed just two minutes later with his second of the day, unassisted, at 7:31.
  • Ty Thureson converted on an assist from Jack Horrigan at 4:27 for the man-up goal to bring the lead to 3-1.
  • Horrigan followed with a goal of his own at 2:03, assisted by Bell.
  • Patrick McAleavey finished off the quarter with a goal at 1:10 off an assist from Horrigan for the 6-1 advantage.
  • Providence outshot Fairfield 14-6, led in groundballs (11-9) and won 6-7 face-off opportunities. 
2nd Quarter:
  • Providence continued its scoring run, opening the second quarter with a goal from Richie Joseph at the 13:09 mark, unassisted.
  • At this point, Fairfield started to edge its way back into the mix, scoring five of the next eight goals.
  • After two Stag goals, Joseph got the shot off again at 9:28, this time assisted by John Hoffman to bring the lead to 7-3.
  • Chabra struck for the third time at 5:41 for a man-down goal to bring the Friars lead to five.
  • After one more goal by the Stags, Bell got his name in the scoring column with an unassisted goal at 4:13.
  • Fairfield closed the half with two more, to cut into Providence's lead (9-6).
  • Providence maintained the shooting edge (13-12) while Fairfield picked up eight of the 15 groundballs of the quarter. The teams evenly split face-off wins, both going 5-10.
3rd Quarter:
  • The Friars only allowed for two Stag goals in the third quarter, scoring four of their own to extend the lead to 13-8.
  • After a Fairfield goal to open the quarter, Providence followed with two (11-7).
  • Chabra picked up his fourth of the day, unassisted, at 13:03, followed by Will Ferraro, who notched his first career-goal at 12:29.
  • The next Fairfield goal was again followed by two Friar goals. This time, it was Thureson at 7:50, assisted by Stephen Markowski, and Joseph at 2:38, unassisted, for their second and third goals of the game, respectively.
  • Providence held a slight 10-9 scoring advantage over Fairfield, however, the Stags led in groundballs (8-4) and went 5-7 in faceoffs.
4th Quarter
  • Providence remained strong into the fourth, scoring four of the six goals of the quarter.
  • Markowski put Providence on the board with a goal, unassisted, at the 6:34 mark (14-9).
  • Fairfield followed with a goal from Jack McKenna for his third of the day to decrease the Stag deficit to four.
  • The Friars followed with three-consecutive goals to end the game.
  • Bell and Horrigan scored back-to-back goals at 4:16 and 4:03, respectively. Horrigan got the shot off after an assist from McAleavey.
  • Markowski closed the day at the 3:00 mark, with the help of Ferraro for his first career-assist.
Notes:
  • Overall, Providence outshot Fairfield 47-30. The two teams finished with an even split over groundballs (30-30) and the Stags held a slight edge over the Friars in face-off victories (16-31).
  • Chabra led the Friars with four goals. The midfielder picked up the seventh hat trick of his career.
  • Joseph added three goals, getting his first career-hat trick.
  • Horrigan and Bell each tallied two goals and two assists for four points apiece.
  • James Corasaniti recorded five saves and improved his record to 3-3.

What's Next:
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 11 as they close out their two-game homestand at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Opening face-off is set for 12:00 p.m.
