Men’s Lacrosse Tops Stony Brook In Overtime, 10-9

Sophomore Jack Horrigan scored the game winner for the Friars in extra time.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team (4-3) earned a 10-9 overtime victory against the Stony Brook Seawolves (2-4) on Saturday, Mar. 11. This marks Providence's first-ever victory over Stony Brook. 
  
1stQuarter: 
  • Providence grabbed a 3-0 lead within the first six minutes of the game. 
  • Ryan Bell put the Friars on the board just after the face-off, with the assist from Quinn McConnaughey, at the 14:54 mark.  
  • John Hoffman followed at 13:47 with an unassisted goal to make it a 2-0 lead. 
  • Jack Horrigan converted on an assist from Hoffman at 9:06 for his first goal of the day. 
  • The Seawolves followed with three goals of their own to close the quarter tied 3-3. 
  • Stony Brook outshot Providence 12-11, led in groundballs 11-4, and captured 4 of the 7 face-off opportunities. 
  
2ndQuarter: 
  • Aside from Stony Brook's opening goal of the period at 13:16, Providence was able to achieve the shutout throughout the remaining 13 minutes of the second quarter. 
  • Providence used this time to score two goals and to go into halftime with the 5-4 advantage. 
  • Horrigan notched his second goal of the day off the assist from Patrick McAleavey at the 2:56 mark. 
  • Richie Joseph scored with 16 seconds remaining in the half.  
  • Providence led in shots, 9-6, and each team grabbed four ground balls. McConnaughey went 4-0 at the face-off 'X'. 
 
3rdQuarter: 
 
  • The Friars only allowed for one goal by the Seawolves in the third quarter, scoring three of their own to extend the lead to 8-5. 
  • McAleavey got his name in the scoring column with a goal at 13:45 off an assist from Joseph. 
  • Ty Thureson followed just a minute later, at 12:48, after finding the back of the net from deep with the help of Bell. 
  • After the lone Stony Brook goal, Thureson fired again with 1:35 remaining. This time, the assist came from AJ Alexander
  • Both teams got 10 shots off, however, the Seawolves led in groundballs (7-6) and went 4-5 in face-offs. 
4thQuarter 
  • Stony Brook was able to edge its way back into the mix, scoring four of the next five goals and forcing Providence into overtime. 
  • The Seawolves found the back of the net three consecutive times, closing the deficit and tying the Friars at eight. 
  • Horrigan earned his fourth hat trick of the season at the 1:22 mark for the 9-8 lead, off the assist from McAleavey, his second of the day. 
  • Stony Brook's Jonathan Huber tied it again at nine with one second on the clock. 
 
Overtime 
  • Horrigan scored the game winner with 2:28 on the clock to give the Friars an overtime victory (10-9). 
 
Notes: 
  • Each team recorded 41 shots. Stony Brook led the friars in groundballs (29-21) and earned an 11-10 advantage on face offs.
  • Horrigan led the Friars with four goals. The sophomore picked up the seventh hat trick of his career. 
  • Alexander earned his first career-point with his assist to Thureson. 
  • James Corasaniti recorded a season-high 19 saves (.679 save percentage) and improved his record to 4-3. 
  • This marks Providence's first-ever victory over Stony Brook. 
 
What's Next: 
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 18 as they travel to the USA Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md. to face Hobart College in the FCA Lacrosse Invitational. Face-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
