PROVIDENCE WELCOMES STONY BROOK… The Providence College men's lacrosse team will host the Stony Brook University Seawolves on Saturday, Mar. 11 for a non-conference match-up. Opening face-off is set for 12:00 p.m.

SERIES BREAKDOWN… Since 1985, the Friars and Seawolves have met eight times. Stony Brook leads the all-time series, 8-0.
MOST RECENT MEETING... The teams haven't met since the 2000 campaign. Providence fell to Stony Brook, 12-5, on the road.
LAST TIME OUT... The Friars got off to an early 6-1 start and led wire-to-wire in their 17-10 victory over Fairfield. Michael Chabra paced the Providence offense with four goals. Richie Joseph notched his first career-hat trick, adding three goals. Jack Horrigan and Ryan Bell tallied four points each on two goals and two assists. Providence won 15-31 face-off opportunities, led by Quinn McConnaughey (14-30), who also collected a team-high six groundballs.
FRIARS IN PHILLY...Providence was defeated by No. 12 Saint Joseph's, 19-6, on Saturday, Feb. 25. Michael Chabra and Jack Horrigan scored two goals each to lead Providence in scoring for the day. Stephen Markowski notched the first two points of his career on a goal and an assist. James Corasaniti made a game-high 13 saves in goal.
PROVIDENCE FALLS TO BROWN...Providence fell to Brown University, 13-7, in the second of two Ocean State Cup games on Tuesday, Feb 21. Michael Chabra recorded his sixth career-hat trick and led the Friars with four goals. Going into halftime, Brown held a one-goal advantage over Providence, but the Bears held the Friars scoreless in the third frame to take a 10-5 lead.
FOURTH QUARTER PUSH TO VICTORY...Providence used a dominant fourth quarter to defeat Siena on Saturday, Feb. 18. The Friars outscored the Saints 7-0 in the final period to earn the 18-11 victory. Three players tallied hat tricks including Michael Chabra (three goals), Ty Thureson (three goals) and Jack Horrigan (three goals). Ryan Bell added two goals and two assists for four points.
On the defensive end, goalkeeper James Corasaniti recorded 17 saves and successfully shut out the Saints in the final quarter.
FIRST OCEAN STATE CUP GAME... Providence fell to Bryant, 15-14, in an Ocean State Cup battle on Saturday, Feb. 11. Ryan Bell recorded a career-best 10 points on a career-high six goals and four assists. Jack Horrigan posted his second hat trick of the season with three goals. Chad Cannon scored his first collegiate goal. Goalkeeper James Corasaniti tallied a season-high 18 saves.
Providence outscored Bryant 5-1 in the fourth quarter to mount a late comeback effort. Bell scored three of the Friars' five goals - all in the final 10 minutes of the game.
PROVIDENCE POWERS PAST HOLY CROSS... Providence got out to a 3-0 lead and never trailed en route to a 12-9 victory in the season opener vs. Holy Cross on Feb. 5 at Anderson Stadium. The match-up was featured by Lax.com as the organization's first-ever Game of the Week.
Michael Chabra and Jack Horrigan each recorded hat tricks in the game. Chabra finished with four goals; Horrigan tallied three.
Patrick McAleavey and Richie Joseph each tallied a game-high two assists. James Corasaniti, a graduate transfer from Fairfield University, made his debut with the Friars in goal and earned the win with 15 saves.
RICHIE JOSEPH NAMED BIG EAST FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK... In the Friars' match-up against Fairfield, Joseph secured his first career-hat trick, setting a career high with three goals in the 17-10 victory. Joseph's points over the weekend give him seven points on the season, putting him fourth on the team.
Earlier in the season, the freshman earned his first career-points against Holy Cross, opening the season with two assists. Joseph earned his next points against Siena, adding a third assist to his resume and scoring his first career-goal.
MATT GRILLO MAKES PROGRAM HISTORY… Matt Grillo has amassed 110 career goals. Grillo ranks third all-time at Providence in career goals, behind Ed Loiselle '92 (136) and Ken Leahy '00 (112). Grillo also is tied for 13th in program history in career scoring, with 136 points. Leahy is the Friars' all-time leading scorer with 188 points on 112 goals and 76 assists.
PROGRAM BEGINS BOBBY BENSON ERA… The Friars welcomed a new coaching staff for the 2023 season led by Head Coach Bobby Benson. Benson spent the last two seasons at Maryland as the offensive coordinator during the Terps' run to the NCAA title in 2022. Maryland registered a 33-1 record during Benson's two seasons in College Park, earned two Big Ten Championships and made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championship game. Before joining the Terps, Benson spent 14 seasons as the offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Johns Hopkins. He helped Hopkins to 11 NCAA appearances, eight quarterfinal bids, three Final Fours and two National Championship games.
MEET THE STAFF... Casey Brodersen, who spent the last 12 seasons as the Associate Head Coach at Bryant University, was hired by Bobby Benson to serve as Associate Head Coach at Providence. He helped the Bulldogs to six Northeast Conference titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances. Carroll Kennedy joined the Friars as an Assistant Coach. Kennedy worked alongside Benson at Maryland during the 2022 season and was previously named USILA Assistant Coach of the Year while at Limestone University in 2015. Colin Munro joined the staff as a Volunteer Assistant after completing his collegiate career at fellow BIG EAST Conference member, Georgetown, in 2022.
WELCOME TO FRIARTOWN… The Friars have 13 freshmen on the roster in 2023. Newcomers include Tyler Flynn (Setauket, N.Y.), Dean Metzger (Garden City South, N.Y.), Harrison Sweeney (West Hartford, Conn.), Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.), Jackson Coutu (Upton, Mass.), Eddie Perry (Bridgewater, Mass.), Owen Finetto (Haworth, N.J.), Luke Schmitt (Garden City, N.Y.), Eric Webb (Westfield, N.J.), Ian Olenik (Windham, N.H.), Frankie Carroll (East Setauket, N.Y.), Tom Sarni (Lynnfield, Mass.), and Cullen Mulhern (Lawrenceville, N.J.).
Additionally, three transfers joined the Friars roster upon Bobby Benson's arrival as Head Coach. James Corasaniti (New York, N.Y.), a graduate transfer from Fairfield University highlights the goaltending unit. Sophomores Pierce Gregory (Sherborn, Mass.) and Vincent Horton (Scituate, Mass.) come to Providence after playing at Bryant University as rookies in 2022.
BELL, CHABRA AND HORRIGAN PROVIDE AN OFFENSIVE BOOST… Junior Michael Chabra and sophomores Ryan Bell and Jack Horrigan have led the Friar offense through the first six games of the season. Bell leads Providence in points per game (4.67) and ranks 10th in the nation in assists per game (2.50). Chabra leads the Friars in goals (18) and ranks third in the BIG EAST in goals per game (3). Horrigan ranks fourth in the BIG EAST and is tied for 11th in the nation with three man-up goals, contributing to his 15 for the season. The Friars hold a .351 shot percentage on 211 shots.
DEFENSIVE LEADERS... Sophomore Gregg Dennison continues to anchor the defensive line with help from senior Grant Latimer. Dennison has collected 18 groundballs, including a career-high six against Siena, while tallying five caused turnovers. Latimer has collected eight groundballs with six caused turnovers. Graduate transfer goalkeeper James Corasaniti has earned a .535 save percentage and five double-digit save games this season. Providence currently ranks eighth in the nation in saves per game (15).
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN BIG EAST POLL... Providence was picked to finish fifth in the 2023 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll (9 points). Georgetown was picked to win the league, having collected five first-place votes and 25 points overall. Denver (20 points) was second and Villanova, who received one first-place vote and 18 points was selected third. Rounding out the conference standings was Marquette (13 points) in fourth and St. John's (five points) in sixth.
SCOUTING STONY BROOK… The Seawolves were selected to finish fourth in the CAA Preseason Coaches' Poll. Additionally, attack player Dylan Pallonetti and midfielder Matt Anderson were selected to the All-CAA Preseason team. The Seawolves are 2-3 to begin the season.
PLAYERS TO WATCH… The Stony Brook offense is led by Pallonetti, who holds the second-longest goal scoring streak in the nation, scoring in 33 consecutive games. The senior leads the team with 24 points on 17 goals and seven assists. Attack players Blake Behlen and Noah Armitage each have 15 points. Behlen has 10 goals and five assists, while Armitage has eight goals and seven assists.
Face-off specialist Renz Conlon has gone 53-96 at the face-off 'X', recording a .552 face-off percentage.
WHAT'S NEXT… The Friars will travel to the USA Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md. to face Hobart College in the FCA Lacrosse Invitational. Face-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
