RALEIGH, N.C. - The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2023 outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays on March 23-25 at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility in Raleigh, N.C. Nine Friars set personal records.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase,
Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) placed third with a personal record of 8:33.78. Thygesen's performance ranks second fastest time collegiately this season and second fastest all-time in program history.
Shane Coffey (Naas, Ireland) set a personal record of 29:25.60 in the 10,000 meters.
DJ Principe (Johnston, R.I.) set a personal record of 13:38.52 in the 5,000 meters, as did
Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) with a time of 13:45.01. Back ran unnattached.
Abdel Laadjel (Lucan, Ireland) finished in a time of 13:53.80.
Josh Lewin (West Chester, Pa.) ran a 1:51.51 in the 800 meters.
Zane Powell (Auckland, New Zealand),
Tim Dolan (Cinnaminson, N.J.) and
Jacob Hefele (Danbury, Conn.) raced for the Friars in the 1,500 meters. Powell led the Friars in a time of 3:47.31, while Dolan and Hefele set personal records of 3:51.50 and 3:54.90, respectively.
On the women's side,
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) ran a 33.39.54 for a personal record in the 10,000 meters. Tuck's time ranks 10
th all-time at Providence College.
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) had a top-10 finish in the 1,500 meters with a personal record of 4:13.24 (sixth place). May's time ranks third all-time in program history.
Jane Buckley (Cork, Ireland) ran a personal best of 15:46.24 in the 5,000 meters to secure eighth place. Buckley's time ranks fifth all-time in program history.
In the 800 meters,
Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland) ran a time of 2:08.39 and
Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.) followed in a time of 2:09.52.
Thygesen, Principe, Laadjel, May, Buckley and Tuck's times should qualify them for the first round of NCAA Championship.
The Friars are back in action Saturday, April 1 at the Bryant University Black and Gold Invitational in Smithfield, R.I.
