Philadelphia, Pa. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 12 Saint Joseph's University, 19-6, on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Philadelphia, Pa. The Friars dropped to 2-3 overall in the 2023 season while the Hawks improved to 3-0.
1st Quarter:
- The Friars held the Hawks scoreless through the first 10 minutes of regulation while recording three goals of their own in that time, all assisted by Ryan Bell.
- Jack Horrigan put Providence on the board with a man-up goal at 13:05.
- Michael Chabra gave the Friars a 2-0 lead after converting on the assist from Bell at 8:48.
- Stephen Markowski followed suit, scoring his first career-goal just a minute later at the 7:23 mark.
- The Hawks closed out the quarter with three goals in the last five minutes to tie Providence, 3-3.
- Providence outshot Saint Joseph's 11-8; however, the Hawks led in ground balls (11-3) and won all seven face-off opportunities of the quarter.
2nd Quarter:
- Saint Joseph's held a 4-1 scoring advantage in the second quarter, taking a 7-4 lead going into the half.
- The Hawks limited Providence to just six shots throughout the quarter, outshooting the Friars, 21-6.
- Chabra tallied the lone goal for the Providence in the second frame, unassisted, at 11:09.
- Saint Joseph's remained undefeated in face-off wins, adding six in the quarter to bring the total to 13 in the half.
- Goalkeeper James Corasaniti kept the Friars within striking distance with nine saves throughout the half.
3rd Quarter:
- The Hawks used the third quarter to expand their lead to nine, scoring eight goals and allowing only two.
- Saint Joseph's scored three goals out of the gate, bringing the lead to 10-4.
- Bell was able to get his name in the scoring column at 9:15 with his first goal of the day, the Friars' fifth.
- Horrigan converted on a shot at the buzzer off the assist from Markowski, his first career-assist, to halt the Hawks' 5-0 run.
- Saint Joseph's face-off specialist, Zach Cole, continued to dominate at the face-off 'X' winning 9-of-10 opportunities in the third quarter.
4th Quarter:
- Sophomore Patrick Yowan and freshman Eddie Perry made their debuts in goal for Providence.
- The Hawks recorded a fourth quarter shutout, while tallying four goals to end the game with a 19-6 victory.
Notes:
- Corasaniti made a game-high 13 saves.
- Chabra and Horrigan led with two goals apiece.
