Men's Lacrosse Downs Holy Cross, 16-9, in 2022 Season Opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I.- The Providence College men's lacrosse team opened its 2022 season with a 16-9 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday, Feb. 5. The Friars improve their all-time record against the Crusaders to 15-17.

First Quarter:
Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) struck first for the Friars with 12:46 remaining to give Providence a 1-0 lead.
Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) followed up with a goal, 2-0, just 54 seconds later.
• Holy Cross responded 27 seconds later to make it 2-1.                    
• Grillo tallied his second of the night, 3-1, at the 5:24 mark.
• The Crusaders got things back within one, 3-2, less than two minutes later.
• McGreen struck again for the Friars, 4-2, with five minutes remaining in the first.
• Holy Cross scored a minute later, 4-3, before Michael Chabra (Reading, Mass.) improved the Friars lead to 5-3 to close out the first period.
• Providence led, 5-3, at the end of the first quarter.
• Providence held a slight shot advantage through the first, 15-14, including a 10-7 edge in shots on goal.

Second Quarter:
• McGreen started off a four-goal run for the Friars, 6-3, 1:32 into the second quarter.
Chris Cusolito (Melrose, Mass.) improved the Friars lead, 7-3, before McGreen scored his fourth of the game, 8-3. John Hoffman (Smithtown, N.Y.) followed up to give the Friars a 9-3 lead.
• Holy Cross scored their lone goal of the quarter, 9-4, with 5:23 remaining in the second.
• McGreen scored on the man-up opportunity for Providence, 10-4, with 3:19 to go in the quarter two.
• The Friars entered halftime with an 10-4 lead.

Third Quarter:
• McGreen started off the scoring in the third, 11-4, with 6:30 remaining in the period.
• Holy Cross scored to make it 11-5, a minute later.
•  Freshman Ryan Bell (Port Jefferson, N.J.) scored his first collegiate goal, 12-5, with 4:04 remaining in the third.
• Holy Cross scored twice in a row to close out the third, 12-7.

Fourth Quarter:
• 
The Crusaders netted two in the fourth quarter while Providence added four goals, 16-9.
• Grillo, McGreen, Hoffman, and Bell all scored in the final period for the Friars, with each player tallying multiple goals for the night.
• The Crusaders outshot the Friars, 10-8 (6-6 SOG) in the final quarter.

Game Notes:
• 
McGreen recorded new career-highs in goals (seven) and points (eight).
• Grillo notched the 12th hat trick of his career. He finished the day with three goals.
• Providence had six different players find the back of the net.
• Hoffman led the Friars with four ground balls.
• Michael Harris (Basking Ridge, N.J.) got his first career win in his first career start in goal for the Friars.
