VCU Nets Two Fourth Quarter Goals In 4-2 Victory Over Field Hockey

RICHMOND, VA. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to non-conference foe VCU, 4-2, on Sunday, Oct. 16 in Richmond, Va. The Friars dipped to 5-10 on the year, while the Rams improved to 9-6.
 
GAME FLOW / NOTES:
• VCU took a 1-0 lead 11:03 into the game as Bridget McCormick tipped in a feed from Litiana Field on a penalty corner.
• The Rams outshot the Friars, 4-0, in the first 15 minutes of play.
• Providence gained the lead (2-1) as Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) and Amanda Collins (San Diego, Calif.) scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter at 18:13 and 25:29, respectively.
• VCU evened the score just before halftime (27:11) to make it a 2-2 game at the break.
• The third quarter was scoreless and the Friars remained within striking distance heading into the final frame.
• The Rams scored two unanswered goals in the fourth to claim a 4-2 win. McCormick earned her second goal of the afternoon at 46:32, followed by Ava Radel's first tally of the season (56:34).
Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) collected five saves in goal for Providence, while Sheridan Messier made one stop for VCU.
• VCU held a 12-7 edge in shots and an 8-2 margin in penalty corners.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Friday, Oct. 21 at 2:00 p.m. against No. 16 Liberty. The match marks the final regular-season home game of the year for Providence.
