Field Hockey Set To Host No. 16 Liberty In Final Regular-Season Home Match

Friars and Flames square off at 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Lennon Family Field.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will face No. 16 Liberty in BIG EAST action on Friday, Oct. 21 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The match is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. and marks the final regular-season home game for the Friars.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (5-10, 2-3 BIG EAST):
• The Friars enter the weekend with a 5-10 overall record, including a 2-3 mark in the BIG EAST.
• Six of the Friars' 10 losses have come against nationally ranked opponents.
Ally DeCoste leads the Friars in scoring with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Three of her four goals have been game winners.
• DeCoste has scored nine of her 12 points during BIG EAST Conference action (3g / 3 a). Her three goals have come on just six shot attempts. Additionally, two of her three goals in BIG EAST play have come inside the opening five minutes of action. She scored 4:32 into the match against Villanova and 1:21 into the match against Georgetown.
Nora Goddard-Despot and Sophia Pompeo are tied for second in scoring with nine points each. Goddard-Despot has tallied three goals and three assists, while Pompeo has recorded four goals and one assist.
• Goddard-Despot is an active member of Canada's Junior Women's National Team.
• Pompeo's younger sister, Lucia, also plays field hockey in the BIG EAST as a sophomore on Quinnipiac's roster.
Niamh Gowing and Lisa McNamara are tied for fourth in scoring with eight points apiece. Gowing has registered three goals and two assists, while McNamara has collected two goals and four assists.
• McNamara is 2-2 at the stroke mark this season. She also competed in the Nexus Championship this past summer.
• Nine different Friars have scored at least one goal.
Asia Porter has played 944 minutes in the cage this season and owns a 2.48 goals against average and a 0.715 save percentage.
 
SCOUTING NO. 16 LIBERTY (9-6, 5-0 BIG EAST):
• The Liberty Flames enter the match with a 9-6 overall record and a 5-0 mark in the BIG EAST Conference.
• Five of Liberty's six losses came against nationally ranked teams.
• Liberty is coming off a 2-1 loss at No. 7 Virginia in its most recent game on Oct. 18.
• Liberty enters the match having won 15 straight BIG EAST regular season contests, dating back to the spring 2021 campaign. The Lady Flames' last conference regular season loss was a 2-1 setback at No. 17 Old Dominion on March 26, 2021.
• Liberty ranks inside the top five nationally six different categories: shutouts per game (No. 1, 0.60), assists per game (No. 1, 3.60), points per game (No. 3, 11.07), goals per game (No. 4, 3.73), scoring average (No. 4, 3.70) and scoring margin (No. 4, 2.57).
• All nine Liberty victories this fall have been by shutout. In those nine games, the Lady Flames have outscored their opponents 50-0.
• Liberty is currently No. 21 in the NCAA Field Hockey RPI listing, and Providence is listed at No. 48.
• Seven players have reached double digits in the points column, led by Daniella Rhodes' 30 points (10g / 10a).
• Bethany Dykema (24 points) and Lizzie Hamlett (22 points) have eclipsed the 20-point mark on the season.
• Seven players have scored five-or-more goals.
• Iritxity Irigoyen has played 864 minutes in the cage and owns a 1.18 goals against average and a 0.696 save percentage.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will conclude the regular-season schedule on Friday, Oct. 28 against BIG EAST foe Quinnipiac. The match will be played in Hamden, Conn. at 3:00 p.m.
