PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) of the Providence College women's ice hockey team was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for December 2021, as announced on Tuesday, Jan. 4. Abstreiter has been previously recognized twice this season as Hockey East Goaltender of the Week. (Oct. 11 and Jan. 3).
Abstreiter started twice for the Friars in the month of December and secured two wins. Abstreiter recorded her second shutout on the season in a non-conference matchup against Princeton (Dec. 3), and recorded 34 saves in the 1-0 victory. In the New Years Eve Hockey East win against Vermont, 3-1, Abstreiter tallied 39 saves. The graduate student finished the month with .50 goals against average and a .986 save percentage. Her save percentage was the best in the nation among all netminders with at least two starts and her goals against was top among all goaltenders with at least two wins.
Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) was recognized as the runner-up for Hockey East Player of the Month.
