Men’s And Women’s Track And Field Team Compete at Virginia Grand Prix

Charlottesville, Va.- The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Virginia Grand Prix in Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday, May 1. Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland), Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) won their respective heats.
On the women's side, O'Neill finished first in her heat in the 800-meter (2:08.09). O'Neill's time was a personal best. Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.) finished third in her heat in the 800-meters (2:11.87). Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) finished fifth overall in the 5,000-meter (16:19.43). Mooney's time, 16:19.43, set the Irish Junior Record in the 5,000-meter. The previous record was held by former Friar Sarah Collins '17.
For the men, Gallagher used a 57 second final lap to propel him to a first-place victory in the 5,000-meter (13:49.02). Gallagher's time was a personal best. White ran a personal best in his first place finish in his heat in the mile (4:02.69). Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) placed tenth in his heat in the mile (4:10.89).
The men's and women's track and field teams compete next at the BIG EAST Championships on May 14-15 in Storrs, Conn.
