Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Marquette, 7-6, In Four Overtimes

Toby Burgdorf made 15 saves and held a .681 save percentage.

Providence, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to the Marquette Golden Eagles, 7-6, in four overtimes on Saturday, April 17 at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The Friars drop to 4-7 overall, 3-6 in BIG EAST play. The Golden Eagles improve to 3-7 overall, 2-6 in BIG EAST play.
 
First Quarter:
- John Hoffman (Smithtown, N.Y.) caused a turnover and found Ryan Zimmerman (Syracuse, N.Y.) for the first goal of the game with 14:42 remaining (1-0).
-Marquette scored two-straight goals to end the quarter to take a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes.
-RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.) won all four face-offs in the quarter.
 
Second Quarter:
-Marquette's Holden Patterson scored a man-up goal to give the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead with 14:13 left in the quarter.
-Zimmerman scored his second goal of the game with 2:56 remaining to pull the Friars back within one (3-2).
-Marquette's Peter Henkhaus scored the final goal of the half with 1:46 left to play (4-2).
-The Golden Eagles led 4-2 at the half.
-Toby Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J.) tallied seven saves in the half.
 
Third Quarter:
 -Marquette's Griffin Fleming tallied the lone goal in the quarter with three seconds remaining on the clock.
-The Golden Eagles led, 5-2, after three quarters.
 
Fourth Quarter:
-Hoffman pulled the Friars back within two after scoring his first goal of the game with 12:26 left to play (5-3).
-Marquette's Connor McClelland scored with 11:18 left to extend the Golden Eagles' lead back to three (6-3).
-Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) tallied his first goal of the game with 3:15 left (6-4).
-Hoffman registered his second goal of the day with 1:44 remaining, pulling the Friars within one (6-5).
-Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) caused a turnover with 19 seconds remaining, as he picked off a pass at mid-field. Nawrocki found Grillo in transition, who beat a defender and the goalie to tie the game with nine seconds remaining (6-6).
-The score was tied, 6-6, at the end of regulation.
 
First Overtime:
-Both teams tallied two shots and one shot on goal in the first overtime.
-Burgdorf made one save.
-The game was still tied 6-6 at the end of the first overtime.
 
Second Overtime:
-Providence outshot Marquette 4-2 in the second overtime. Both teams tallied one shot on goal.
- The game was tied 6-6 after two overtimes.
 
Third Overtime:
-Marquette outshot Providence, 2-1, in the third overtime.
-Burgdorf tallied a save in the overtime period.
 
Fourth Overtime:
-Marquette's Devon Cowan scored the game-winning goal with three seconds remaining.
-The Golden Eagles won, 7-6.
 
Game Notes:
-The Friars drop to 2-1 all-time in four-overtime games.
-Marquette leads the all-time series, 6-3.
-Hoffman led the Friars with three points on two goals and one assist.
-Nick Shaw (Canton, Mass.) picked up a career-high and team-best seven groundballs. Shaw also caused a turnover.
-Emmett Jennings led the Friars and tied a career-high in caused turnovers (four).
-Burgdorf made 15 saves and held a .681 save percentage. This is Burgdorf's season-best in save percentage.
