Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Marquette, 12-8

Six different Friars scored in the victory.

Milwaukee, Wis. The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Marquette, 12-8, on March 13 at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis. The Friars improved to 3-3 overall, including a 2-2 mark in BIG EAST play, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 0-4 overall (0-4 in BIG EAST).
 
First Quarter:
-The Friars' John Hoffman (Smithtown, N.Y.) found Ryan Zimmerman (Syracuse, N.Y.) for the first goal of the game at 12:47 (1-0).
-After Marquette scored with 11:24 to tie the game, Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) answered for the Friars at 9:01 (2-1).
-Marquette tied it up with 4:39 remaining, and the score would remain tied at the break (2-2).
 
Second Quarter:
-Marquette's Griffin Fleming scored the first goal of the second quarter at 2:01 to take the lead for the Golden Eagles (3-2).
-Providence  scored two goals in under twenty-five seconds to close the quarter and regain the lead at halftime. Axelson tied it up for Providence and was assisted by Zimmerman with 1:20 left. With 52-seconds remaining, Zimmerman dished out another assist, this time to Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.), for his first goal of the game (4-3).
-Providence entered halftime leading 4-3.
-Toby Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J.) had six saves and a .667 save percentage in the first half.
-RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.) dominated the face-off 'X' in the first half. He won 6-of-9 face-offs in the first half and picked up two groundballs.
 
Third Quarter:
-Marquette scored with 9:49 remaining on the clock to tie the game, once again (4-4).
-Providence rallied with four-straight goals to end the quarter.
-Grillo scored his second of the game at 8:35 to retake the lead for the Friars. Zimmerman was credited with the assist (5-4).
-Less than a miniute later, Zimmerman recorded his third assist of the game as Hoffman found the back of the net (6-4).
-Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) gave the Friars a three-goal lead with 5:55 left in the quarter (7-4).
-Grillo scored his second of the quarter with 26-seconds remaining to give Providence a four-goal cushion. Axelson assisted the goal (8-4).
-Providence led 8-4 after three quarters.
 
Fourth Quarter:
-Marquette's Griffin Fleming scored with 11:56 remaining to bring the game back within three.
-Grillo scored his fourth goal of the game with 9:53 left to regain the four-goal advantage. Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) was credited with the assist.
-The Golden Eagles scored with 6:49 remaining to decrease the Friar lead to three.
- In a man-up situation, Zimmerman found Axelson for the goal to make the lead four again (10-6).
-Marquette scored two straight goals to bring the Friar lead to two.
-McGreen scored his second goal of the game with 2:44 left to play to add an insurance goal for the Friars (11-8).
-Grillo tallied his fifth goal of the game with 1:31 left to play to push the lead back to four (12-8).
-Providence defeated Marquette, 12-8.
 
 
Game Notes:
- Six different Friars scored in the victory.
-Zimmerman had a career-high five assists and tied his career-high in points (six). He registered one goal and one groundball in the victory.
-Grillo scored a season-high and team-best five goals.
-Romeo dominated the face-off for the Friars. Romeo went 17-23 at the "X" and picked up a team-best seven groundballs.
-Burgdorf tied his season-high in saves (14) and recorded a .636 save percentage.
-With Nawrocki's goal, he now has 100 career points (50 goals, 50 assists). Nawrocki ranks tied for 15th all-time at Providence in career assists.

PC– Toby Burgdorf – 14 saves, 8 goals against, .636  save percentage
     
MU – Sean Richard - 16 saves, 12 goals against, .571 save percentage
