QUEENS, N.Y. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated the St. John's Red Storm, 16-8, on Sunday, Feb. 21 in Queens, N.Y. The Friars improved to 1-1 on the season (1-0 BIG EAST), while St. John's fell to 1-1 overall. Seven different players scored for the Friars.
First Quarter:
•
Dan Axelson (Cohasset, Mass.) put the Friars on the board. The Friars led 1-0 after seven minutes of play. He was assisted by
Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.).
•Nawrocki put up his second assist to
Matt Leader (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) to give the Friars an early 2-0 lead with six minutes remaining in the first quarter.
•A minute later,
Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) contributed with his first goal of the afternoon. He was assisted by Axelson. The Friars increased their lead 3-0.
•Providence held the shot advantage, 16-4.
•
RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.) won all four faceoffs in the first quarter.
Second Quarter:
•The Friars opened the quarter with a goal from
Dylan O'Donnell (Coventry, R.I.), which extended their lead, 4-0.
•St. John's scored the next two goals to close the gap on the Friars. The score was 4-2 with 12:09 left in the second half.
•Nawrocki, Axelson, and
Nick Shaw (Canton, Mass.) gave the Friars a commanding lead again with three goals in less than a minute of each other. PC led, 7-2 with 9:40 to go in the second.
•The Red Storm's Dylan Willis scored the team's third goal of the quarter.
•Providence took control in the final minutes of the quarter. Leader, Nawrocki and Hinrichs all tallied their second goals of the game. The score was 10-3 going into halftime.
•Providence outshot St. John's 15-8, and held the advantage, 9-4 in groundballs.
Third Quarter:
•In the man-up situation, Hinrichs got the third quarter going with his third goal of the afternoon. He was assisted by Nawrocki and extended the lead, 11-3.
•St. John's capitalized on their man-up situation in the next minute. Ryan Schaeffer scored with 9:51 left in the third to make the score, 11-4.
•
Ryan Zimmerman (Syracuse, N.Y.) added the last goal of the quarter. He was assisted by O'Donnell and the score was 12-4 going into the fourth.
•
Toby Burgdorf made his first three saves in the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
•The Red Storm converted in the opening 25 seconds of the last quarter. Providence held the lead, 12-5.
•Axelson picked up his second hat trick of the season with 13:12 left on the clock. Not long after, Zimmerman notched his second goal of the day to give the Friars a dominating, 14-5 advantage.
•To finish out the last quarter St. John's scored three more goals. Zimmerman recorded his first hat-trick in the last four minutes of the game. He was assisted by Leader.
•Providence led 16-8 at the end of regulation.
•The Friars held the advantage in groundballs, 15-4 and edged the Red Storm in faceoffs, 7-2.
Game Notes:
•Four Friars recorded hat tricks -- Leader, Axelson, Hinrichs and Zimmerman.
•Nawrocki led the team in points with six. He had two goals and added four assists on the day. Leader and Axelson recorded four points, while Zimmerman and Hinrichs each had three points respectively.
•The Friars outshot St. John's, 59-26, and edged them in shots on goal, 33-13.
•Providence shared the ball with eight assists. St. John's added one for the game.
•Romeo grabbed 11 groundballs and won 21 of 28 faceoffs. Collectively, the Friars dominated in groundballs, 44-21.
