TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Providence College women's cross country team finished 26th overall at the 2021 NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Nov. 20 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. The Friar women's squad was led by sophomore
Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) as she placed 60th overall in a time of 20:13.1 over the 6K course and scored in the 49th spot.
"I am very happy with the way Laura and Maria ran," Head Coach
Ray Treacy said. "For the younger members of the team, it was a great experience for them that they will learn from and bring to the Championship next year. I am satisfied where we finished as Lilly was hampered by an injury coming into the meet."
The Friars finished second [ahead of Villanova (27th) and Butler (29th)] of the four BIG EAST schools that ran at the NCAAs.
In addition to Mooney, the other Friars who scored were graduate student
Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.), sophomore
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England), junior
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Ontario) and freshman Kimberly May (Auckland, New Zealand). Coffin scored in the 71st spot (20:26.1) and Flockhart was 128 (20:51.6). Tuck (167 – 21:12.9) and May (179 - 21:20.5) rounded out the scoring for the Friars.
The Friar women's squad made its 29th appearance overall at the NCAA Championship and first since 2017.
On the men's side, graduate student Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) ran as individual and finished in 61st in a time 29:45.8.
"It was a very good run for Marcelo today in the conditions," Treacy said. "Marcelo held his position throughout the race. He will be looking to come back here next year and earn All-American honors."
