NEW ORLEANS, LA.- The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today [Mar. 6] that Providence College's
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) was named the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year for the 2020 indoor track and field season. The regional award is determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.
Wheeler qualified for the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. on Mar. 13 after running a 15:40.67 in the 5,000-meters. Her 5,000-meter time ranks 11
th in the NCAA. Wheeler is seeded eighth at the championship. This past weekend, Wheeler won the 3,000-meter (9:25.32) and 5,000-meter (15:49.65) events at the BIG EAST Championships in Geneva, Ohio to claim the first two BIG EAST titles of her career. Wheeler's personal best in the 3,000-meter was set at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 14 where she ran a time of 9:08.17.
Wheeler is the only female athlete to represent the BIG EAST at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
