Matt Grillo recorded his fifth career hat trick.
BOSTON, Mass.- The Providence College men's lacrosse team opened its 2020 season with a 12-5 victory over Boston University on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Nickerson Field in Boston, Mass. The Friars snapped a four-game game skid against the Terriers and earned their first season-opening win since 2014.
First Quarter:
• Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) struck first for the Friars with 12:55 remaining to give Providence a 1-0 lead.
• After BU tied the game (1-1), Dan Axelson (Cohasset, Mass.) responded just under a minute later to regain the lead for the Friars, 2-1.
• At the end of the first, the game was tied, 2-2.
• Providence held the shot advantage, 8-7, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
Second Quarter:
• The second quarter was all Friars as Providence outscored BU, 6-0.
• Five different Friars scored in the second quarter. Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) led the Friars with two goals. McGreen, Axelson, John Hoffman (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Mike O'Grady (Milton, Mass.) all found the back of the net with one goal each.
• Providence outshot Boston University 14-7 in the quarter, including an 8-5 advantage with shots on goal.
• The Friars entered halftime with an 8-2 lead.
Third Quarter:
• The Terrier scored the first two goals out of the half to get within four (8-4).
• Providence responded with three unanswered goals by Sean Leahey (Cranford, N.J.), Hoffman and Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.).
• Providence continued to get shots at the cage with seven shots on goal compared to BU's three.
• The Friars held a sizable lead heading into the fourth, 11-4.
Fourth Quarter:
• Providence and Boston University each scored one goal in the fourth quarter.
• Grillo scored the lone goal for the Friars, giving him a hat trick.
• The Terriers outshot the Friars, 8-7 (5-4 SOG).
Game Notes:
• Leahey matched his career-high in points (five), with two goals and three assists.
• Grillo notched the fifth hat trick of his career. Grillo finished the day with three goals and one assist for four points.
• Providence had seven different players find the back of the net.
• Emmett Jennings (Fair Haven, N.J.) and RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.) led the Friars with four groundballs apiece.
• Toby Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J.) got his first career win in his first career start in goal for the Friars.
• Providence now leads the all-time series against Boston University, 5-4.

What's Next: The Friars will play their home opener at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 3:30 p.m. against Holy Cross. The Friars have defeated the Crusaders in four-straight games. Most recently in 2019, Providence defeated Holy Cross, 12-5.
