The Friars improve their record to 2-0 on the season.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Holy Cross, 6-4, in its home opener on Saturday, Feb. 8 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved their record to 2-0 on the season, while Holy Cross moved to 1-1.
First Quarter:
• Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) scored in the opening minutes for the Friars to give Providence a 1-0 lead with 13:54 on the clock.
• Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) extended the Friars' lead scoring two goals in the over the next four minutes. The Friars held a 3-0 lead with 10:02 left in the first.
• Holy Cross got on the board with just under eight minutes of play to get within two (3-1).
• Grillo struck again to secure his second hat-trick of the season. The sophomore was assisted by Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.).
• Providence held the shot advantage, 10-6, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
• The Friars had the lead 4-1 at the end of the first.
Second Quarter:
• Grillo found the back of the net once again for his fourth goal of the game. Dan Axelson (Cohasset, Mass.) found Grillo on the play with 10:40 on the clock.
• The rest of the quarter was quiet as each team went scoreless the remainder of the half. Providence outshot Holy Cross, 8-7, and held the advantage, 10-6, in groundballs.
• The Friars entered halftime with a 5-1 lead.
Third Quarter:
• In a slow third quarter, the Crusaders scored the first goal with under a minute remaining. The Friars to a 5-2 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.
• Holy Cross scored the lone goal of the quarter but the Friars still had the advantage in shots, 10-9. The Crusaders had five shots on goal compared to the Friars four.
Fourth Quarter:
• The Crusaders scored with 10:43 left in regulation to cut the deficit to 5-3.
• Holy Cross made it a one-point game (5-4) with just over five minutes to play.
• Grillo ended the Providence scoring drought with 24 seconds on the clock, as he converted on an empty net.
• The Friars held on for a 6-4 win.
• Holy Cross outshot the Friars, 14-8, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Game Notes:
• Grillo matched his career-high in goals, with five. He notched his sixth career hat trick and second of the season.
• Hinrichs had one goal on the day, scoring his second of the season.
• Rob Stovel (Fergus, Ontario) and Jake Anotnucci (Westwood, Mass.) led the Friars with four ground balls apiece.
• Toby Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J.) had a career high 13 saves for his second career win.
• Holy Cross leads the all-time series, 17-14.
• It is the first time since the 2009 season that the Friars have held their opponents to five or fewer goals in back-to-back games. During that season, the Friars defeated Canisius, 5-4 and St. Joseph's, 5-4 (4OT).
• This game marked the fewest goals allowed by the Friars since a 14-4 win over UMass Lowell on March 19, 2019
