Friars head into next weekend’s BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 3 seed.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated the No. 17/18 Villanova Wildcats in overtime, 9-8, on Saturday, April 27 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.

1st Quarter: Villanova scored the first goal of the afternoon 4:58 into the action.  Providence answered with back-to-back goals from Duncan McGinnis (Menlo Park, Calif.) and Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) at 7:35 and 5:32 to take a 2-1 lead.  The Wildcats leveled the score, 2-2, on the first EMO of the game with 1:23 on the clock. With time winding down in the quarter, Providence gained possession of the ball with 12-seconds left as Rob Stovel (Fergus, Ontario, Canada) dove toward the sideline off a Villanova shot attempt and was closest to the ball.  A quick restart by the Friars set up a go-ahead goal by David Procopio (Syracuse, N.Y.) as time expired (3-2). It marked Procopio's first tally of the season and fifth of his career, and was assisted by McGreen.

2nd Quarter: Villanova outscored the Friars, 2-1, in the second quarter to level the game heading into halftime.  Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) scored Providence's lone goal in the frame, marking his team best 36thtally of the season. He was assisted by Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.).

3rd Quarter: The Wildcats used another 2-1 scoring advantage in the third quarter to take a one-goal edge into the final frame (6-5).  Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) notched Providence's only goal in the third, unassisted, at 7:40.

4th Quarter: Colin Keating (Ridgewood, N.J.) won the opening face-off in the fourth quarter and fed Kearns for his first goal of the day and 25thof the season just six seconds into the action. Villanova responded with back-to-back goals at 13:18 and 12:51 to mount the largest lead by either team in the game (8-6), at two goals.  Junior Dan Axelson (Cohasset, Mass.) got Providence within one (8-7) with 4:46 left in the quarter, with his 10thgoal of the year.  In the waning moments of regulation, Villanova forced a Providence turnover and attempted a clear with a field-length pass. Senior goalkeeper Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) cut off the pass with four-seconds left and quickly cleared the ball back into the offensive box to McGreen. He played it to Hatzipetrakos, who forced overtime as the game clock expired.

Overtime: Keating won his 11thface-off of the day to start overtime and took the ball directly to the cage, scoring his first-career goal to lift Providence to victory (9-8). The play took just five-seconds off the clock and the win solidified the No. 3 seed for the Friars in the 2019 BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship next weekend.
