Men’s Lacrosse Falls To No. 17 Georgetown In BIG EAST Semifinals, 13-12

DENVER, COLO. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 17 Georgetown, 13-12, in the BIG EAST Semifinals on May 2 in Denver, Colo. Providence, who entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, concluded its season with a 7-9 overall record. Georgetown, the No. 2 seed, will advance to the BIG EAST Championship Game to face the winner of No. 1 Denver and No. 4 Villanova.  The Hoyas improved to 12-4 on the year.

1st Quarter: Georgetown converted two of its first three shots to take a 2-0 lead through the first 3:34 of play. The Friars responded with five-straight goals to take a 5-2 lead. Freshman Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) led the offensive effort with two goals and one assist. Providence's fourth and fifth goals came in a span of six seconds as Grillo netted his second of the day at 1:45 and Colin Keating (Ridgewood, N.J.) followed immediately off the face-off at 1:39. The Hoyas closed the quarter with a goal at 1:04, as Providence took a 5-3 lead into the break. 

2nd Quarter: Providence got back-to-back goals from Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) and Owen Martinson (Milton, Mass.) to start the second quarter and mount a 7-3 lead, forcing a Georgetown timeout. After a brief scoring drought for both teams, the Hoyas picked up three-straight goals to get within one (7-6) with 4:14 on the clock.  The Friars scored two goals in the final 33 seconds to take a 9-6 advantage into halftime.  Hatzipetrakos struck for his second of the game, unassisted.  Kearns also got his second goal of the game, as he converted an EMO with 18-seconds remaining, off a feed from Hatzipetrakos.

3rd Quarter: Georgetown used a 7-1 shot advantage early in the third quarter to record three-straight goals and tie the game, 9-9, heading into the media timeout.  The Friars wrapped up the scoring in the third quarter with three unanswered, capped by a buzzer beater by Grillo, to take a 12-9 lead.  It marked Grillo's third goal of the game for his fourth-career hat trick.

4th Quarter: Georgetown scored four-straight goals to take a 13-12 lead with 7:06 left in the final frame. It marked the Hoyas first lead since 4:55 of the first quarter (2-1). Providence was held scoreless in the fourth quarter as the Hoyas held on for victory.
Game Notes:
  • Eight different Friars recorded goals in the contest, including three players with multiple goals.
  • Grillo notched his fourth-career hat trick, while Kearns and Hatzipetrakos each added two tallies.
  • Hatzipetrakos recorded multiple goals for the 11th time this season. Kearns had eight multi-goal games.
  • Boyce made 10 saves and concludes his impressive career with 725 total saves, the most among active Division I goaltenders.
