DENVER, Colo. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team was edged by the No. 12/13 Denver Pioneers, 14-8, on Saturday, April 20 in Denver, Colo. The Friars are now 6-8 overall and 2-2 in BIG EAST play.
1st Quarter: Denver jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring four even-strength goals in the opening seven minutes. The Friars responded with a 3-0 run over the final four minutes of the quarter, including a pair of goals from freshman
Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.).
Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) tallied his seventh goal of the season between Grillo's goals.
2nd Quarter:
Ryan Zimmerman (Syracuse, N.Y.) tied the game (4-4) 2:29 into the second quarter.
Kevin McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) assisted Zimmerman's goal, which was his third of the season. Denver regained the lead near the midway mark, scoring for the first time in over 15 minutes. Jack Hannah scored his second of the game for the Pioneers with 35 seconds on the clock to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.
3rd Quarter: McCordic opened the second-half scoring with 9:12 remaining in the quarter. Denver then scored two goals to push the lead to 8-5.
Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) had an impressive 15 minutes in goal, making eight of his 18 total saves during the third stanza.
4th Quarter: The fourth quarter featured the most offense, as nine total goals were scored. Denver outscored Providence 6-3 in the quarter.
Luke O'Grady (Wayne, Pa.),
Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) and
Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) were the Friars' goal scorers. O'Grady's goal, which came early in the quarter, was the only man-up goal of the game for either side. It was also Providence's only man-up opportunity of the afternoon.
Game Notes:
- Matt Grillo led the offense with three points on two goals and one assist. It was his ninth multi-goal game of the season.
- 18 saves marked Tate Boyce's second-highest total this season. He's had 15+ saves in five games this season. Boyce also eclipsed the 700 career save mark in the game.
- Brendan Kearns, Kevin McCordic and Ryan Zimmerman each tallied two points.
- Three different face-off specialists took draws for the Friars. Colin Keating (Ridgewood, N.J.) had the most attempts (10) and best percentage (.400).
- The Friars are now 5-3 on the road.
- Denver locked in a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament with the win.
