SERIES BREAKDOWN - PROVIDENCE VS. MARQUETTE... The Friars are 1-5 all-time against the Golden Eagles. Last season, Marquette earned a 12-11 overtime victory. Providence led 11-7 before Marquette stormed back late in the fourth quarter. Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored four goals in the game, while Evan McGreen (Naragansett, R.I.) posted a goal and four assists. Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) made nine saves in net.
FRIARS FALL TO GEORGETOWN... The Hoyas claimed a 17-15 victory over Providence last weekend (April 6). Providence led 9-5 at halftime before Georgetown stormed back. Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) posted a season-high eight points on five goals and three assists. Boyce made 15 saves in net, marking his fourth game of the season with 15+ stops. Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.), Kevin McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) and Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) were the other Friars with three or more points.
OT WIN TO OPEN BIG EAST PLAY... The Friars moved to 1-0 in league play with an 8-7 overtime win at St. John's (March 30). Tim Hinrichs led the team offensively, scoring two goals and adding an assist. His assist came on Matt Grillo's (Setauket, N.Y.) game winner. Kevin McCordic and Luke O'Grady (Wayne, Pa.) scored man-up goals to help the Friars go 2-for-3 with the man advantage. Boyce made 17 saves in net for the Friars.
HATZIPETRAKOS LEADS THE OFFENSE... After being held scoreless on opening day against BU, Nick Hatzipetrakos posted seven-straight games with three or more goals (Feb. 9-Mar. 19). He reached 100 career points with two goals and an assist in the Friars' game against Drexel (Mar. 24). The senior has a total of 33 goals and has had eight games with a hat trick or better this season. He's been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice this season (March 11, April 8).
Hatzipetrakos ranks third in the BIG EAST in goals per game (3.00) and points per game (3.45). He is first in the BIG EAST in shot percentage (.478).
LOCK DOWN DEFENSE... Providence ranks 14th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 9.82 goals per game. The Friars are second in the BIG EAST, behind Denver (8.90).
ONE GOAL GAMES... Five of Providence's 11 games this season have been decided by just one goal. The Friars are 2-3 in those contests.
BOYCE CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE CAREER... Boyce, a three-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List for the second-consecutive season on Feb. 28. More recently, he was named one of 10 finalists for the prestigous Senior CLASS Award (March 29). The goalkeeper has already had a storied career in Friartown, including being named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and a USILA/Nike Third-Team All-American in 2017. For his career, Boyce holds a 9.53 goals against average, a .547 save percentage and has accumulated 667 total saves.
So far this season Boyce has a 9.97 goals against average and a .570 save percentage, which is seventh in the nation. He's the BIG EAST leader in save percentage and saves per game, averaging 12.91. He has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week three times (Feb. 25, Mar. 19, Apr. 1).
JENNINGS STRONG ON D... Sophomore Emmett Jennings (Fair Haven, N.J.) has been strong defensively for the Friars, starting all 11 games. He has 17 caused turnovers and 21 ground balls this season. He ranks sixth in the BIG EAST in caused turnovers per game, with 1.55.
CONTRIBUTIONS AT THE 'X'... RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.) and Colin Keating (Ridgewood, N.J.) have shared the face-off duties for the Friars this season, each having taken 119 draws. Keating has won 60 attempts and holds a .504 win percentage, while Romeo has won 58 face-offs for a .487 percentage. Keating went 17-for-30 (.567) at the 'X' last weekend against Georgetown.
GRILLO GETS GOING... Freshman Matt Grillo has had a strong start to his rookie campaign, starting all 11 contests. He is third on the team in points (26) and goals (18). Three of his goals have been game winners, including the deciding goal against St. John's to open BIG EAST play. He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 25 after a seven-point performance at St. Joseph's.
WHERE KEARNS RANKS... Last year, senior Brendan Kearns became the 22nd player in program history to reach the 100-point mark. He currently has 87 goals and 52 assists for 139 total points. He is tied for eighth all-time in points, tied for ninth in goals and is 12th in assists.
Kearns is second on the team in points (31) and goals (20). He's been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice this season (Feb. 11 and March 4).
FRIARS AT HOME... Three of the Friars' last four regular season games for the will be played at home. Providence is looking for its first home win of the season, as the team is 0-4 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The Friars are 5-2 on the road.
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN BIG EAST POLL... Providence was picked to finish fifth in the 2019 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll with a total of 10 points. Denver was picked to win the league, having collected four first-place votes and 25 points overall. Marquette (18 points) was picked to finish second and Georgetown (17 points), who received one first place vote, was picked third.
SCOUTING MARQUETTE... Marqutte dropped a mid-week game, 13-6, at Notre Dame (April 10) to fall to 6-5 on the season. The Golden Eagles are 2-1 in BIG EAST play with wins over St. John's (12-8) and Georgetown (9-8). Their loss came to Georgetown (15-11). Marquette, who is currently recieving votes in the Inside Lacrosse Poll, averages 11.5 goals per game, while giving up 11.64. The Golden Eagles have a strong man-down defense (.730) that ranks 11th best nationally.
PLAYERS TO WATCH... Redshirt senior Tanner Thomson leads the team in goals (25) and points (34). He ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in goals per game, with 2.50. Senior John Wagner leads the team in assists (16) and has 29 total points. Freshman Holden Patterson is a threat in man-up situations, as he has five goals with the extra man.
Jared Hershman leads Marquette from the 'X' and has the second-best winning percentage in the league (.535). Sophomore John Hulsman has played all 11 games in net, making eight starts. He holds an 11.38 goals against average and a .457 save percentage.
