PROVIDENCE, R.I.– Providence College forward
Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) was named BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week on March 4. She earned the honor for a fifth time this season, setting a program record.  Former Friar greats Mandy Saunders (1993-94) and Andrea Mangum (1986-87) each claimed the honor four times during their respective rookie seasons at Providence. Baskerville also becomes the first five-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week since Marquette's Allazia Blockton, who collected rookie honors seven times in 2015-16.
Â
In the final weekend of regular-season action, Baskerville averaged 8.5 points and 5.0 rebounds, while shooting 80-percent from the field against a pair of top-25 opponents in DePaul and Marquette.  She also added 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocked shot per game.
Â
Baskerville finished the regular-season schedule ranked No. 1 among BIG EAST Conference freshmen in scoring (8.7 ppg), rebounding (7.1 rpg), field-goal percentage (.570, 110-193), blocked shots (46), double-digit scoring games (14), double-digit rebounding games (six) and double-doubles (five).
Â
Putting the individual statistics aside, Baskerville has played a key role in helping the Friars claim their highest seed in the BIG EAST Tournament since 1996.  Providence will enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed after finishing in a tie for sixth in the regular-season standings with Creighton (8-10). Â
Â
The Friars' eight wins in BIG EAST play are the most for the program since the 1996-97 season.  Additionally, the Friars have recorded just their third .500-or-better season since 1991-92.  Providence finished 19-15 overall in 2009-10 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT, and claimed a 15-15 mark during the 1992-93 season.
Â
Providence returns to action on Saturday, March 9 against No. 10 seed Xavier in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. (ET) at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill.  The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) via FOX Sports Go.
