Nick Hatzipetrakos recorded his second hat trick of the season.
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to Bryant, 11-8, in the first leg of the Ocean State Cup on Feb. 16 in Smithfield, R.I. The Friars are the reigning Ocean State Cup Champions, having swept Bryant and Brown during the 2018 season. Providence dropped to 1-2 on season, while Bryant improved to 1-1.
Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syossett, N.Y.) recorded his second hat trick of the season to lead the Friars offense, with three goals. After being shut down in the season opener vs. Boston University, he has scored a total of seven goals in the last two games for Providence, which leads the team overall.
1stQuarter:Bryant scored the first three goals of the day, including their second and third goals within a span of 11 seconds. Hatzipetrakos got Providence on the board with 2:22 left in the quarter to make it a 3-1 game.
2ndQuarter: Bryant opened the scoring in the second quarter, and the teams proceeded to trade goals, giving the Bulldogs a 6-3 edge with 9:25 left on the clock. The Friars cut the deficit to 6-5 at halftime with back-to-back goals by Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) and Hatzipetrakos at 4:51 and 2:01.
3rdQuarter:The Bulldogs scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter to gain a 9-5 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of action.
4thQuarter:The Friars out-scored the Bulldogs, 3-2, in the fourth quarter but Bryant's lead was too large to overcome. Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) and Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) were each credited with a goal at 9:21 and 6:07, respectively. Hatzipetrakos finished off his hat trick with 37-seconds to play.
Game Notes: Providence held a 37-30 advantage in shots. Twenty-three of the Friars' shots were on target, but Bryant goalkeeper Luke Caracciolo collected 15 saves to earn the win.
