Villanova, Pa. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 15/15 Villanova University, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon (April 28) at Villanova Stadium.
1st Quarter: The Wildcats controlled the pace of play in the first quarter using their stout defense and timely scoring to jump in front. Devin McNamara got the Wildcats on the board less than a minute into the frame to put them on top, 1-0. Connor Kirst then made his presence known, scoring a pair of goals just over two minutes apart from one another to give Villanova a 3-0 lead.
2nd Quarter: Providence got on the board 17 seconds into the second quarter as Kevin McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) scored on the man-advantage to cut the lead to 3-1. Villanova extended its lead up to four, 5-1, on goals from Keegan Khan and Kirst, but the Friars clawed their way back in before halftime. 3rd Quarter: The Friars offense caught fire early in the third quarter to close the gap. David Procopio (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored off a feed from Leahey to cut the Villanova lead to two. After an Eric Overbay goal stretched the Wildcats lead back up three, Providence's attack went back to work. Three straight goals from Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.), Leahey, and Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) evened the scored at 7-7 with 5:52 left in the third quarter. Villanova closed the frame strong with goals from Danny Seibel and Keegan Khan to give the Wildcats a 9-7 lead going into the fourth.
4th Quarter: Leahey completed the hat-trick just over two minutes into the final frame to pull Providence within 9-8. Moments later, the Wildcats answered with Kirst scoring his fourth goal of the afternoon to put Villanova up 10-8 with 10:53 left. The Friars refused to go quietly as a goal on the man-up from Austin Goltz (Orchard Park, N.Y.) made it a one-goal game, 10-9, with 4:54 to play. James Barclay (Toronto, Ontario) picked up a groundball and the Friars cleared successfully with 20 seconds left.
