Providence, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Brown University, 12-11, in overtime on Tuesday night at Brown University to win the 2018 Ocean State Cup. It marked the Friars first victory over the Bears in school history.

1st Quarter: In a high-scoring first quarter, it was the host Bears who grabbed the early lead. After Providence's Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored with 8:19 left in the quarter to put the Friars in front (1-0), Brown scored four-consecutive goals, with Luke McCaleb and Stephen Hudak each finding the back of the net twice to give the Bears a 4-1 lead. Providence cut into the deficit before the end of the frame with Sean Leahey (Cranford, N.J.) and Nawrocki each scoring, courtesy of assists from Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) to make it a 4-3 game after one.

2nd Quarter: Brown opened up a two-goal lead when Hudak finished off a first half hat trick, but the Friars rallied to even the score. Leahey notched his 20th goal of the season before Austin Yezarski (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored his first of the year to tie the score at five with 11:18 left in the half. With the score tied 6-6 midway through the second quarter, Joseph McHale (Bernardsville, N.J.) put the Friars in front as his third goal of the season gave Providence a 7-6 lead at the half.

3rd Quarter: The Bears took advantage of their opportunities on the man-up to go in front. George Grell and Jackson Newsome each scored on the extra man opportunities around a Friars' goal from Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.Y.) to tie the score at eight. Brown then jumped in front, 9-8, with just under three minutes left in the quarter on a goal by Michael Panepinto.

4th Quarter: After the two sides went scoreless through the first three minutes of the final quarter, Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) tied the game at nine with his 12th goal of the year. Less than two minutes later, the Bears answered with Panepinto scoring his second goal of the night to put the Bears back in front, 10-9, with 10:12 left. Hudak provided the Bears with some breathing room with his fourth goal of the game, but the Friars came storming back. Leahey cashed in to pull Providence within one and then Joshua Keller completed the comeback, evening the score at 11 with 2:50 left to send the game to overtime.

Overtime: The Bears won the opening faceoff, but Grell's shot went high and the Friars' junior All-American goalie Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) picked up the ground ball to give Providence possession. Out of a timeout, Leahey scored his 22nd goal of the season to give Providence the overtime win.

Game Notes: The win is Providence's (5-8) first over Brown in school history. The Friars are now 1-22 all-time versus the Bears. The win secures the Ocean State Cup for Providence by virtue of their win over both Brown and Bryant University back on February 17th. It is the first overtime victory for the Friars this season, who are now 1-4 in OT contests this season. Leahey's four goals leave him with a team-high 22 for the season.

What's Next: The Friars host Denver University on senior day, Saturday April 21, on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Friars will honor their senior class in a pregame ceremony schedule for 12:40 pm.
