PROVIDENCE COLLEGE WELCOMES YALE TO ALUMNI HALL... The Providence College women's basketball team will host Yale University on Thursday, Nov. 29 at Alumni Hall / Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
FRIARS ALL-ACCESS... The Friars' game against Yale will be broadcast live on Friars All-Access, which is a subscription service available on www.Friars.com. Mike Mancuso will provide the play-by-play. Live stats also will be available to fans, free of charge, via www.Friars.com.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE VS. YALE ALL-TIME... The Friars and Bulldogs have played 12 times during the history of the two women's basketball programs. Providence leads the all-time series, 11-1. The lone loss in the series came on Dec. 29, 2006 as Yale claimed a 68-55 victory in New Haven, Conn.
FRIARS AND BULLDOGS AT ALUMNI HALL... Providence and Yale have played six times at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars owns a 6-0 record vs. Yale on their home court.
THE LAST TIME THE TWO TEAMS MET... Providence College defeated Yale, 55-51, on Nov. 29, 2017 in New Haven, Conn. It marked the first meeting between the two teams since the 2009-10 campaign. Providence trailed 40-37 heading into the fourth quarter, but out-scored the Bulldogs, 18-11, in the final 10 minutes to take the victory. Jovana Nogic and Maddie Jolin combined for 28 of the Friars' 55 points. Nogic added six rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Jolin posted seven boards, one assist and one steal. Tamara Simpson, who is no longer with the team, led Yale with 17 points and collected nine steals. Current junior Roxy Barahman tallied 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
FRIARS HAND BOSTON COLLEGE FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON... Providence College defeated Boston College, 61-57, on Nov. 27 at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. It marked Boston College's first loss of the season (6-1), as the Friars improved to 2-2 on the year. The victory was the first for Providence at Conte Forum since Feb. 17, 1996. It's also the first back-to-back victories over the Eagles since 1993-1994.Â
BACK-T0-BACK GAMES WITH 40+ REBOUNDS... The Friars have recorded 40+ rebounds in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2014-15 season. That year, Providence hauled in 40+ rebounds in three-straight games against DePaul (47), Villanova (41) and Georgetown (43). In Providence's two most recent games, it has secured 47 boards against Sacred Heart and 46 vs. Boston College.
DEFENSE... The Friars have held three of their four opponents to 30-percent shooting from the field or lower this season. Providence has posted a 2-1 record in those games, with its only defeat coming against Quinnipiac. Providence held the Bobcats to 27.9-percent from the field in a four-point loss (48-44).
FRIARS ARE 2-0 WHEN THEY OUT-REBOUND THEIR OPPONENT... Providence owns a 2-0 record this season when they out-rebound their opponents. On Nov. 21, the Friars recorded a season-best 47 boards in a win over Sacred Heart, while limiting the Pioneers to 28 rebounds. In its most recent game on Nov. 27, Providence held a 46-38 edge on the glass in a 61-57 win over Boston College.
FRIARS POST +19 ADVANTAGE ON THE BOARDS... The Friars' 47 boards vs. Sacred Heart on Nov. 21 are the most in a single game since Dec. 21, 2016, when the squad also hauled in 47 points vs. Monmouth. Additionally, Providence's +19 rebounding margin marked the largest rebounding margin for the Friars since out-rebounding UMass Lowell, 65-39 (+26), on Nov. 9, 2013.
CHANELL WILLIAMS LIFTS FRIARS IN DECISIVE FOURTH QUARTER... Chanell Williams scored seven of her 13 points in a decisive fourth quarter, including four points in the final 14 seconds to seal the 61-57 victory over Boston College. She finished the game 5-8 from the field and added six rebounds and one assist.
MORE ON WILLIAMS' PLAY OF LATE... In the last two games, Chanell Williams has averaged 19.0 points per game, while shooting an impressive 70.8-percent from the field (17-24). Additionally, she has averaged 8.0 points per game in the fourth quarter. Against Sacred Heart, Williams scored a career-high 25 points and has hit double-figures in the scoring column in three of four games overall for PC.
ALYSSA GEARY PROVIDING A SPARK OFF THE BENCH... Freshman forward Alyssa Geary scored a career-high 13 points in the Friars' victory over Boston College on Nov. 27. She shot 4-7 from the field, including a 4-5 performance from behind the three-point arc. Geary also added six rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal in a career-high 27 minutes of action. Through four games, Geary is shooting a team-best .647 from the field (11-17), including an .833 shooting percentage from three-point territory (5-6).
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK... Four of the Friars' six newcomers have seen game action this season through four contests, including two players who are averaging 20+ minutes per game. Kaela Webb is averaging 21.8 minutes per game in her rookie campaign and ranks third on the team in scoring (8.3 ppg) and assists (1.5 apg). She is shooting .400 from the field (12-30), including an impressive .600 from three-point land (6-10). Alyssa Geary is averaging 20.8 minutes per contest and ranks fourth on the team in scoring (7.5 ppg) and second in rebounding (5.0 rpg). At 6-foot, 4-inches tall, she also leads the team in blocked shots (1.50 bpg), field-goal percentage (.647, 11-17) and three-point percentage (.833, 5-6), including a 4-5 performance against Boston College.
THREE-POINT THREATS... Joining proven three-point specialists Jovana Nogic and Maddie Jolin this season, freshmen Alyssa Geary and Kaela Webb are ranked first and third, respectively, in the BIG EAST in three-point field-goal percentage. Through four games, Geary is shooting .833 (4-5) from beyond the arc. Webb is shooting .600 (6-10) from deep.
STRONG FOURTH QUARTER FUELS FRIARS TO VICTORY OVER SACRED HEART... The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Sacred Heart, 62-52, on Nov. 21 for the Friars' first victory of the season. The Pioneers out-scored Providence, 20-9, in the third quarter to take a three-point lead heading into the final frame. The Friars dominated the fourth quarter with a 19-6 scoring advantage and a solid performance on the defensive end.
CHANELL WILLIAMS CLAIMS BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL... Sophomore Chanell Williams eclipsed the 20-point mark for the first time in her career at Providence with a 25-point effort against Sacred Heart on Nov. 21. Williams hit 12-of-16 shots from the field and added two rebounds and a game-high three assists. She scored nine of the Friars' 19 points in the decisive fourth quarter to lift Providence to a 62-52 victory. For her efforts, she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 26. It marked the third BIG EAST Weekly honor of her career, having been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on two occasions last season.
OLIVIA ORLANDO LEADS THE FRIARS ON THE GLASS... Olivia Orlando hauled in a career-high 12 rebounds in the Friars' victory over Sacred Heart (Nov. 21). She has led the Friars in rebounding in three of four games, ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in rebounds per game (8.3 rpg). Orlando ranks third in the BIG EAST in defensive rebounds, with an average of 5.8 per game.
FOURTH QUARTER COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST QUINNIPIAC... The Providence College women's basketball team staged a fourth-quarter comeback, but fell short in a 48-44 loss to Quinnipiac on Nov. 15 in Providence, R.I. The Friars trailed by 13 (41-28) with 9:25 remaining in the game, but went on a 12-0 run to get within one (41-40) with 2:57 left on the clock. Jen Fay halted the run for the Bobcats with a pair of free throws, but Olivia Orlando answered with two made free throws on the other end to get back within one (43-42). Providence got a stop on the defensive end of the floor and looked to take its first lead since the 6:41 mark of the first quarter, but turned the ball over. Fay went to the line for Quinnipiac and missed both attempts, but the Bobcats kept control of the ball with an offensive board. After a timeout by Quinnipiac, Fay gave her team a 45-42 advantage with 1:22 to play. Senior Maddie Jolin hit two free throws for Providence with 50-seconds on the game clock to make the score 45-44. The Bobcats called timeout to advance the ball to mid-court and drew up another play for Fay, who hit a fall-away jumper as the shot clock was winding down. Providence brought the ball down the floor to the offensive end and called a timeout with 10.2-seconds left. The Friars turned the ball over on the inbounds play, and Fay sealed the win for Quinnipiac with a free throw. Jolin finished the night with nine points for the Friars. Orlando notched six points and a career-high nine rebounds.
FRIARS FALL TO PENN STATE IN SEASON OPENER... The Friars led by as many as 15 points with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter, but fell to Penn State, 74-72 in their season opener on Nov. 8 in University Park, Pa. Providence held the lead for just over 36 minutes of action, but Penn State used a 23-9 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to gain a tie the game, 72-72, with 36-seconds left on the clock. Providence committed a turnover on its next possession and Penn State's Sam Breen was fouled on the other end with 0.4 seconds left. Breen sank a pair of free throws to give the Nittany Lions their first lead since 4:13 of the first quarter (16-15). Providence called a timeout to advance the ball to mid-court and draw up a final play. Freshman Alyssa Geary converted a bucket off of a lob pass into the post, but the officials waved off the basket after a video review showing the ball was still in her hand as the clock expired.
KAELA WEBB NETS MOST POINTS IN COLLEGIATE DEBUT AT PROVIDENCE SINCE 2013... Freshman guard Kaela Webb came off the bench to score 15 points in her collegiate debut with the Friars against Penn State (Nov. 8). Her 15 points are the most by a freshman at Providence in their collegiate debut since Sarah Beal '17 posted 20 points vs. UMass Lowell on Nov. 9, 2013. She was 6-11 from the field (.545), including 2-4 shooting from three-point territory. She also recorded one rebound, two assists and two steals in 23 minutes of action.Â
SHARING THE ROCK... Providence dished 17 assists on 29 made field goals in its season opener at Penn State. Last season, the Friars recorded 17-or-more assists in just two games. PC dished a season-high 20 assists vs. Savannah State (11/21/17) and 17 assists against Xavier (1/19/18).
JOVANA NOGIC NAMED TO ANN MEYERS DRYSDALE AWARD WATCH LIST... On Oct. 23, it was announced that Jovana Nogic was named to the 20-player watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, which is presented annually to the top shooting guard in NCAA Division I. It marks the second-straight season that Nogic has been featured on the watch list.
JOVANA NOGIC FEATURED ON 11-PLAYER PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM... Jovana Nogic was named to the 2018-19 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Oct. 25 at the league's annual media day at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Nogic is one of 11 players to earn preseason recognition. It marks the second-straight year that she has earned Preseason All-BIG EAST honors. Nogic was named an All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention honoree at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season.Â
1,000-POINT MILESTONE WITHIN REACH FOR MADDIE JOLIN... Maddie Jolin has recorded 777 career points during her career. She posted her best offensive season a year ago, totaling 330 points for an average of 10.6 points per game. Through four games, Jolin is averaging 6.8 points per game. She needs 223 points to become the 35th player in program history to score 1,000 points.
NOGIC RANKS 12TH ON FRIARS' ALL-TIME SCORING LIST... Jovana Nogic owns 1,287 career points (13.7 ppg) as a Friar. She currently ranks 12th on the Providence's all-time scoring list. Since the start of the season, she has jumped six spots on the career scoring list. Nogic trails Stephanie Cole '92, who sits in 11th place with 1,321 points.
FRIARS RETURN TOP-FOUR SCORERS FROM 2017-18... Providence College returns its top-four scorers from a season ago, led by Jovana Nogic (17.1 ppg) and Maddie Jolin (10.6 ppg). Clara Che finished third on the team in scoring average (6.9 ppg), followed by Chanell Williams (6.7 ppg). In all, the four players combined for 1,281 of the team's 1,850 points, accounting for 69.2-percent of the Friars' offense.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE WELCOMES SIX NEWCOMERS TO THE ROSTER... The Friars' seven returning players from the 2017-18 campaign will be joined by six newcomers on the roster. First-year players include guards Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.), Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Maya Klein (Stamford, Conn.), in addition to forwards Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia), Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) and Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.).
LOOKING BACK AT 2017-18 SEASON... The Friars finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 10-21 overall record and a 3-15 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence fell to Butler in overtime, 73-67, in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round, held at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill.Â
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN BIG EAST PRESEASON COACHES' POLL... Providence College was picked to finish ninth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, released on Oct. 25 at Madison Square Garden during the league's annual media day. DePaul and Marquette are co-favorites to win the league title, with each securing five first-place votes and 77 points.
FRIARS CLAIM A WINNING RECORD IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY IN BACK-TO-BACK SEASONS... The Friars finished non-conference play in 2017-18 with a 7-5 mark and secured a winning record in non-conference action in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns. In 2016-17, Providence finished the non-conference portion of their schedule with an 8-4 record.
DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS... The Friars recorded double-digit wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2010-11 and 2011-12. Last season, Providence recorded 10 wins and in 2016-17 it totaled 12 victories.
PROVIDENCE SET THREE-POINT PERCENTAGE RECORD IN BACK-TO-BACK SEASONS... The Friars have set a single-season record for three-point field goal percentage each of the last two seasons. In 2016-17, Providence shot a school-record 0.374 from beyond the arc (192-514). Last season, the Friars topped the single-season record book, once again, shooting 0.391 from three-point territory (192-491).
MORE FROM DEEP... In each of the last two seasons, the Friars have connected on 192 three-point field goals. Providence's 192 three-pointers during the 2017-18 and 2016-17 are tied for the third-most triples in program history for a single season.
FRIARS COME UP JUST SHORT... Ten of the Friars' 21 losses during the 2017-18 season were decided by a single-digit margin, including three games by five points or less. Â
BIG EAST ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM SELECTION CHANELL WILLIAMS RETURNS TO COURT FOR SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGN... Providence College point guard Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) was named a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in 2017-18. Williams played all 31 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting line-up 17 times. She averaged 6.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and a team-best 2.6 assists per game. During BIG EAST Conference regular-season play, Williams averaged 8.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Williams was a two-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honoree (Jan. 8 and Jan. 22). She recorded nine double-digit scoring games for the Friars, including eight during BIG EAST action. The rookie tallied a career-high 16 points against Seton Hall on Jan. 5. She also posted career highs of seven rebounds vs. Seton Hall (Jan. 26), five assists vs. Yale (Nov. 29) and five steals vs. Marquette (Jan. 10). Williams became the 17th player from Providence College to earn BIG EAST All-Freshman or All-Rookie Team honors, and the first since Sarah Beal in 2014.
MADDIE JOLIN LOOKING TO BUILD OFF OF IMPRESSIVE JUNIOR CAMPAIGN... Last season, Maddie Jolin put together a solid junior campaign. She finished second among her teammates in scoring (10.6 ppg) and led the Friars in rebounding (4.7 rpg). Jolin also added 1.8 assists and 1.0 steal per contest. She found her rhythm from three-point territory and led the team in field-goal percentage from beyond the arc (.439, 66-158).
JOLIN FINISHED SECOND AMONG BIG EAST PLAYERS IN 3PT FIELD-GOAL PERCENTAGE... Maddie Jolin finished second among BIG EAST players in three-point field-goal percentage last season (.439, 66-158). Her percentage also ranked 21st among NCAA Division I players.
JOVANA NOGIC NOTCHED THIRD-HIGHEST SCORING TOTAL BY A JUNIOR IN PROGRAM HISTORY... Jovana Nogic's 513 points in 2017-18 marked the third-highest single-season scoring total by a junior in program history. The top-two on the list include, Friars' all-time leading scorer Tracy Lis (759) and Nadine Malcolm (628). Additionally, Nogic was the first player to eclipse 500 points in a single season since Chelsea Marandola (613) during the 2009-10 campaign.
NOGIC HOLDS SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR THREE-POINTERS... Jovana Nogic set the Providence College single-season record for three-pointers, with 91, during the 2016-17 season. The previous record was held by Julie Wheeler '98, which she set during the 1994-95 season, with 82. Â
NEARING CAREER RECORD FOR THREE POINTERS... The Providence College record for three-pointers made in a career was set by Julie Wheeler '98, with 252, in 101 games (1994-98). Senior guard Jovana Nogic has hit 240-581 attempts from three-point territory (.406). Over the course of her career, Nogic has averaged 77 three-pointers per season. She needs 12 three-pointers to tie Wheeler's record.
NOGIC RANKS AMONG NCAA ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS FROM BEYOND THE ARC... Jovana Nogic ranks ninth among active NCAA Division I players in career three-point percentage. Nogic has hit 40.6-percent of her attempts from beyond the arc (240-591). Additionally, she ranks 18th among active NCAA career leaders in three-pointers made per game (2.55) and 13th in three-point field goals made (240). Â
FRIARS IN OVERTIME GAMES UNDER JIM CROWLEY... Providence is 2-4 in overtime games under the direction of second-year Friars Head Coach Jim Crowley. In his first season with the program (2016-17), Providence posted a 1-2 mark in overtime games. In 2017-18, Providence compiled a 1-2 mark in overtime. The Friars are 2-0 in overtime games when they score 90+ points, and they are 0-3 in overtime vs. BIG EAST Conference opponents.
OCEAN STATE TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT... The Third Annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament will be hosted by the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I. and is scheduled for Dec. 1-2. The Friars will open play against URI on Dec. 1 at Noon. Bryant and Brown will square off in the second game of the day at 2:00 p.m. The consolation game and championship game are slated for 12 and 2 p.m., respectively on Dec. 2. The University of Rhode Island will be hosting a toy drive on Dec. 2. Fans who bring a new/unwrapped toy to the games will receive free entry.
