PROVIDENCE TRAVELS TO SETON HALL FOR BIG EAST MATCH-UP... Providence will travel to South Orange, N.J. on Friday, Jan. 5 to face Seton Hall in BIG EAST play at Walsh Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
TUNE-IN... The Friars' game against Seton Hall will be nationally-televised on FS2. Bob Picozzi will be on the call and LaChina Robinson will serve as color analyst.
PROVIDENCE VS. SETON HALL ALL-TIME... The Friars and Pirates have met 64 times during the history of the two women's basketball programs. Seton Hall leads the all-time series, 35-29.
RECENT HISTORY... The Friars and Pirates met three times during the 2016-17 campaign. The two teams split the regular-season series, with each team winning on their home court. On Jan. 20, 2017, the Pirates claimed a 55-43 victory at Walsh Gymnasium. Providence followed with a commanding 74-57 win at Alumni Hall on Feb. 19, 2017. In the third meeting of the year, Seton Hall defeated Providence, 73-60, during the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament held in Milwaukee, Wis. on March 4.
THE SERIES AT A GLANCE... Prior to the Friars' victory over Seton Hall last season on Feb. 19, 2017, the Pirates had won nine-straight games against Providence. The most recent Friar victory was the first since Feb. 11, 2012 in Providence, R.I. (62-47).
PROVIDENCE AND SETON HALL AT WALSH GYMNASIUM... The Friars and Pirates have met 28 times at Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, N.J. Seton Hall leads the series on its home court, 18-10, including victories in each of the last five meetings played there.
PLAYER TO WATCH... Junior Jovana Nogic has hit the court against Seton Hall five times during her career at Providence and has averaged 11.6 points per game vs. the Pirates. Last season, Nogic averaged 14.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in three games against Seton Hall. She netted a personal series-best 19 points in the Friars' lone victory over the Pirates last season on Feb. 19, hitting 6-11 attempts from the floor, including a 4-5 performance from beyond the arc.
DARK HORSE... Last season, Allegra Botteghi averaged 12.7 points and 7.3 rebounds in three games vs. Seton Hall. She shot a combined .415 from the field (17-41) and posted double-digits in two of the three games. She narrowly missed a double-double in the first meeting (Jan. 20) with eight points and 10 rebounds. In the second meeting of the year (Feb. 19), Botteghi collected 14 points and eight rebounds. In the BIG EAST Tournament match-up to conclude the year (March 4), she tallied 16 points and four rebounds.
PROVIDENCE EARNS FIRST WIN OVER ST. JOHN'S SINCE 2007... The Friars defeated St. John's, 49-44, on Jan. 2 at Carnesecca Arena in Jamaica, N.Y. It marked the Friars' first BIG EAST victory of the season and first win over St. John's since Feb. 10, 2007. The Friars held the Red Storm to 25 points below their season average (69.1 ppg) en route to the win. St. John's led by as many as four points in the third quarter with 2:55 showing on the game clock. Maddie Jolin rattled home her fourth three-point bucket of the night on the offensive end to bring Providence within one (33-32), and Jovana Nogic converted a pair of free throws less than a minute later to give the Friars a 34-33 lead (1:38). St. John's closed the quarter with two unanswered buckets from Tamesha Alexander. Her second came as time expired to give the Red Storm a 37-34 edge heading into the final frame. The Friars held St. John's to 2-16 shooting in the fourth quarter and out-scored the Red Storm 15-7 to take the win. The Friars hit just 3-11 of their shots from the field in the final 10 minutes, but were able to seal the win with an 8-8 performance from the foul line. Nogic, who had been held to just two points in the first three quarters, scored nine of the Friars' 15 points in the decisive frame. She hit her only field goal of the evening -- a three pointer -- with 6:45 left in regulation to tie the game, 39-39. It was part of a 13-3 run that gave Providence a five-point lead with 16-seconds left (47-42). Maya Singleton pulled St. John's within three (47-44) with seven seconds left, halting a streak of 11-straight misses by the Red Storm to that point. Nogic put the game away with a pair of free throws on the other end. Providence was 6-6 from the foul line in the final 29-seconds of the game. Jolin paced the Friars with 14 points, while Nogic finished the night with 11. New York City native Chanell Williams recorded 10 points and four assists for the Friars.
FRESHMEN STEP UP IN CRITICAL GAME... Freshmen Chanell Williams and Kyra Spiwak played a critical role in the Friars' victory over St. John's on Jan. 2. The duo combined to score 13 of the Friars' 22 first-half points to keep Providence in the game, and were two of just three players to crack the scoring column in the opening half (Maddie Jolin scored the remaining nine first-half points). Williams tallied six points on 3-4 shooting in the opening 20 minutes and dished three of her team-best four assists. Spiwak was a perfect 3-3 from the field in the first half and 1-1 from the foul line for a career-high seven points.
FRIARS ARE 6-2 ON THE ROAD THIS SEASON... Providence has registered six of its seven wins away from home this season (6-2). Three of those wins came on a neutral court during the Savannah Invitational (Nov. 21-23). Providence defeated Northeastern (98-95 OT), Yale (55-51) and St. John's (49-44) on its opponent's home court. The Friars' two losses this season on the road came against Quinnipiac (62-36) and Sacred Heart (78-75).
SINGLE DIGITS... Providence is 5-5 in games decided by 10-points or less, including a 4-2 mark in games decided by five points or less.
FRIARS COME UP JUST SHORT... Five of the Friars' seven losses this season have been decided by a single-digit margin, including two by five points or less.
STEADY OFFENSIVE PRESENCE IN LEAGUE PLAY... Junior Maddie Jolin is the only Friar to score in double figures during each of the Friars' three BIG EAST games this season. Prior to opening league play, Jolin was held to single digits in three-consecutive games. Overall, Jolin averages 11.6 points per game and has hit double figures in the scoring column 11 times. In conference action, Jolin averages 12.7 points per contest, which ranks 16th in the league.
1,000-POINT MILESTONE... Jovana Nogic is nearing the 1,000-point career milestone. She enters Friday's game against Seton Hall with 984 points (74 games). Nogic need 16 points to become the 34th player in program history to achieve the feat. Sarah Beal '17 is the most recent Friar to reach the 1,000-point plateau. She finished her career ranked 21st on the Friars' all-time scoring list with 1,188 points (2013-17).
NOGIC RANKS FIFTH IN THE BIG EAST IN SCORING... Jovana Nogic leads the Friars and ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in scoring with an average of 18.2 points per game. She has hit double figures in 13 of the Friars' 15 games, including a career-high 31 points against Northeastern on Nov. 14. Nogic, who is on the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List, has recorded six, 20+ point games, including three games with 25+ points. Her most recent 20-point performance came against No. 18/18 Villanova on Dec 30 (26 points).
PROVIDENCE LEADS THE LEAGUE AND RANKS FOURTH IN THE NATION IN THREE-POINT PERCENTAGE... The Friars lead the BIG EAST and rank fourth in NCAA Division I in three-point field goal percentage this season. The Friars have converted 103-of-252 attempts from beyond the arc to shoot 40.9-percent.
FRIARS SHOOT 50-PERCENT OR BETTER FROM FIELD A LEAGUE-BEST FOUR TIMES... The Friars have shot better than 50-percent in four games this season, which leads the BIG EAST Conference. Providence ranks fourth in the league in field-goal percentage overall, shooting 42.8-percent (334-781). The Friars shot a season-best .597 against Northeastern on Nov. 14, having converted 37-of-62 field-goal attempts.
HOME VS. AWAY... In seven games on their home court at Alumni Hall, the Friars have recorded an overall field-goal percentage of .402 (149-371) and a three-point percentage of .361 (43-119). Providence is shooting the ball significantly better away from home. In eight games on the road (including neutral-site games), the Friars have shot .451 (185-410) from the field, including .451 (60-133) from beyond the arc.
NOGIC RANKS FIFTH IN THE NATION IN FREE-THROW PERCENTAGE... Jovana Nogic ranks first in the BIG EAST and fifth in the nation in free throw percentage. She has shot 94.6-percent from the foul line (53-56). At one point during the season, Nogic had converted 33-consecutive attempts from the foul line. In the Friars' most recent game against St. John's, Nogic was a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe. Her eight made free throws matched a single-game career high. For her career, she has cashed in on 91.7-percent of her attempts at the line (111-121). Nogic's current streak of consecutive free throws made stands at 12.
NOGIC HOLDS SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR THREE-POINTERS... Jovana Nogic set the Providence College single-season record for three-pointers, with 91, during the 2016-17 season. The previous record was held by Julie Wheeler '98, which she set during the 1994-95 season, with 82. For her career, Nogic has hit 189-463 attempts from three-point territory (.408). The Providence College record for career three-pointers made was set by Wheeler (252) in 101 games (1994-98).
NOGIC RANKS 12TH AMONG NCAA ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS IN THREE-POINT PERCENTAGE... Jovana Nogic ranks first in the BIG EAST and 11th among active NCAA Division I players in career three-point percentage. Nogic has hit 40.8-percent of her attempts from beyond the arc (189-463). Lexi Brando of Oregon leads the way at 45.6-percent (241-529). BIG EAST players Adrianna Hahn (Villanova) and Audrey Faber (Creighton) rank 21st and 22nd on the list, respectively.
FRANKLIN SHOWING FLASHES... Ny-Asia Franklin is in the midst of her first season with the Friars after transferring from ASA Junior College. She is third among her teammates in scoring (7.8 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (4.9 rpg). She has hit for double figures in the scoring column six times, and has posted the team's only double-double of the year (13 points / 13 rebounds) against Northeastern. She has proven to be efficient from the field, ranking eighth in the BIG EAST in field-goal percentage (.481 (50-104). Franklin has hauled in a team-high eight rebounds in each of the Friars' last two games against No. 18/18 Villanova and St. John's.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE... Junior college transfer Ny-Asia Franklin recorded the first double-double of her career with the Friars on Nov. 14 against Northeastern. She posted 13 points and 13 boards against the Huskies. Franklin joins Allegra Botteghi (4) and Maddie Jolin (1) as the only active players on the current roster to record a double-double.
FRIARS FALL SHORT IN UPSET BID OF NO. 18/18 VILLANOVA... Providence College gave 18th-ranked Villanova all it could handle during their BIG EAST match-up on Dec. 30 in Providence, R.I. The Friars led for the majority of the game, but it slipped away from them late in the fourth quarter and `Nova escaped with a 63-55 win. Villanova started the game on a 6-0 run with back-to-back three pointers, but the Friars responded well. After a season-low five points against Georgetown in the BIG EAST opener, Jovana Nogic tallied 11 of the Friars' 15 points in the first quarter. Providence held a 15-13 lead at the conclusion of the opening 10 minutes. The Wildcats regained the lead early in the second quarter with a 6-0 run. Sophomore guard Ny'Dajah Jackson came up with a steal for the Friars and went coast-to-coast for a lay-in to halt the run. Nogic followed with a three pointer to give Providence back the lead (20-19) with 7:41 on the clock. Villanova answered on the other end with a jumper from Alex Louin at the 6:18 mark of the second, but the Friars finished the second quarter with an 11-4 scoring advantage to take a 31-25 lead at halftime. Nogic finished the first half with 18 points on 7-10 shooting from the field, including a 4-5 performance from beyond the arc. In the third quarter, the Friars got out to a 10-point lead (35-25) on back-to-back buckets by Clara Che and Ny-Asia Franklin. The Wildcats fought back to get within one (37-36), but the Friars bounced back out to a 44-38 lead with 26-seconds on the clock. Villanova's Mary Gedaka hit a three pointer to end the quarter to make it a three-point game heading into the final frame (44-41). The Wildcats stepped up in the fourth quarter and out-scored the Friars, 22-11. Maddie Jolin hit a three-pointer with 4:58 left to tie the game, 51-51. From there, Villanova went on a 10-0 run to take 61-51 lead and seal the victory. Nogic finished the day with 26 points on 9-15 shooting from the field, including a 4-8 shooting performance from three-point territory. She also contributed four rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot. Jolin added 10 points and five rebounds and two assist. The Wildcats were paced by Gedaka, who posted 24 points on 11-12 shooting.
COMBINATION OF TURNOVERS AND SEASON-LOW SHOOTING PERFORMANCE DOOM FRIARS IN BIG EAST OPENER... Providence fell to Georgetown, 75-43, in its BIG EAST opener on Dec. 28. The Friars found themselves trailing 19-0 after just eight minutes of action and never recovered. At the end of the night, Georgetown had out-scored Providence, 35-0 in points off of turnovers, 22-0 in fast-break points and 42-8 in the paint. The Friars committed 30 turnovers in the game and shot a season-low 27.7-percent from the field (13-47).
FRIARS CLAIM A WINNING RECORD IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY IN BACK-TO-BACK SEASONS... The Friars finished non-conference play with a 7-5 mark and have secured a winning record in non-conference action in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns. Last season, Providence finished the non-conference portion of their schedule with an 8-4 record.
FRIARS CLAIM SAVANNAH INVITATIONAL TITLE... Providence posted a 3-0 record and claimed the Savannah Invitational title in Savannah, Ga. The Friars defeated Savannah State (78-48), Wright State (74-69) and Stetson (56-45).
FRIARS EARN FIRST IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP SINCE 2012... The Friars last won an in-season tournament championship during the 2012-13 season, as part of the Fordham Holiday Classic in Bronx, N.Y. Providence College defeated Colorado State (71-53) and Lafayette (66-54) on Dec. 29-30, 2012. Last season, the Friars competed in two in-season tournaments. Providence finished 2-0 at the UNCW Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic, but the tournament did not award a champion. The Friars also participated in the first annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament, and fell to Brown in the championship game.
JIM CROWLEY HOLDS 7-2 MARK AT IN-SEASON TOURNAMENTS WITH PROVIDENCE... Providence College Head Coach Jim Crowley owns a 7-2 overall record with the Friars at in-season tournaments. The only two losses for Providence under the direction of Crowley at an in-season tournament have come against Brown. In consecutive seasons, Brown has defeated Providence at the Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament. The Bears claimed a 77-70 in last year's championship game. This season, Brown defeated the Friars, 64-59, in the opening game of the tournament.
NOGIC NAMED BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK... Jovana Nogic was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Nov. 27. It marks the first time in her career that she has earned the honor, and comes on the heels of being named Most Valuable Player at the Savannah Invitational on Nov. 23. Nogic led the Friars to a 3-0 record and the tournament title at the Savannah Invitational, where she averaged 22.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. She shot an impressive 43.5-percent from the field (20-46), including a blistering 57.1-percent from three point territory (16-28). Nogic also was a perfect 12-12 from the foul line.
BOTTEGHI NAMED TO SAVANNAH INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM... Allegra Botteghi was named to the Savannah Invitational All-Tournament Team on Nov. 23. She played steady basketball throughout the tournament and averaged 7.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Botteghi posted a tournament-high 12 points in the Friars' victory over a tough Wright State team on Nov. 22. She also led Providence in rebounding in two of three games at the Savannah Invitational. In the Friars' game against Stetson, Botteghi tallied a team-best six points and four rebounds in the first half to keep Providence in good position to stage a comeback.
JOLIN NAMED TO OCEAN STATE TIP-OFF ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM... Junior guard Maddie Jolin earned Ocean State Tip-Off All-Tournament Team honors on Dec. 3. She averaged 15.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steal per game at the event in games vs. Brown and Rhode Island. Her scoring and rebounding averages were tops on the team. She shot .579 from the field (11-19), .500 from three-point territory and 1.000 from the charity stripe (2-2) while averaging 32 minutes per game. Jolin tallied 16 points and nine rebounds against Brown and followed with 14 points, six boards, three assists and two steals against Rhode Island.
MADDIE JOLIN SPARKS IMPROBABLE COMEBACK... Junior guard Maddie Jolin tallied 18 of her career-high 23 points in the fourth quarter, as the Friars mounted an improbable come-back victory against Northeastern on Nov. 14. The Huskies led 71-51 with 9:09 remaining in the game, before Jolin rattled off 10-consecutive points en route to a 15-0 run by the Friars. Jolin shot 6-7 from the field in the final quarter, including a 3-3 performance from three-point territory. She also hit 2-3 free-throw attempts. For the game, Jolin was 8-11 from the field, including 4-5 from beyond the arc.
NOGIC DRAINS CAREER-HIGH 31 POINTS... Jovana Nogic led the Friars with a career-best 31 points on Nov. 14 against Northeastern. She complemented a red-hot Maddie Jolin in the fourth quarter with nine points, and took control in the overtime, scoring eight of the Friars' 13 points in the extra session. For the game, Nogic shot 12-19 from the field and hit 6-6 shots from the free-throw line. Nogic's 31 points are the second most scored by a BIG EAST Conference player this season. Audrey Faber (Creighton) notched 34 points against Drake on Dec. 3.
THIRTY SOMETHING... Jovana Nogic is the first Friar to score 30+ points in a game since Tori Rule '15 dropped 30 points against Marquette on March 7, 2015. Nogic's 31 points against Northeastern marks the second-highest scoring total in the BIG EAST Conference this season.
FRIARS IN OVERTIME GAMES UNDER JIM CROWLEY... Providence is 2-2 in overtime games under the direction of second-year Friars Head Coach Jim Crowley. In his first season with the program (2016-17), Providence posted a 1-2 mark in overtime games. The Friars are 2-0 in overtime games when they score 90+ points.
JOVANA NOGIC NAMED TO ANN MEYERS DRYSDALE AWARD WATCH LIST... Junior Jovana Nogic was announced as a candidate for the inaugural Ann Meyers Drysdale Award. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced its watch list, comprised of 20 players, on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Named after the first player, male or female, to be named to the All-America Team in four-straight seasons, the annual award recognizes the top shooting guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. Nogic led the BIG EAST Conference and finished 19th in NCAA Division I in three-point field goal percentage (.429) and 20th in three-point field goals made per game (3.03). She ranked second in the BIG EAST and 25th in the nation in three-point field goals made (91).Additionally, Nogic hit at least one three-point bucket in 28 of the Friars' 30 games. She knocked down three-or-more three-point attempts in 18 games, including six games with five-or-more makes from beyond the arc. On Jan. 27, 2017, Nogic recorded a career-best seven three-point makes (7-11) vs. eventual BIG EAST Tournament Champion Marquette. Her shooting prowess also extends to the free-throw line, where she knocked down 33-of-36 attempts (.917). Nogic is one of five players to land on the watch list from the BIG EAST Conference, joining Ashton Millender (DePaul), Natisha Hiedeman (Marquette), Allazia Blockton (Marquette) and Akina Wellere (St. John's). The Selection Committee for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2018 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Drysdale and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. Fans also will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalist at www.hoophallawards.com.
HOW THE FRIARS FARED IN 2016-17... The Friars finished the season with a 12-18 overall record and a 4-14 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The Friars' 12 wins marked a seven-game improvement in the win column, compared to the previous season when they finished 5-24 (2015-16). It also marks the most wins overall in a single-season since 2011-12, when the team finished the year 13-17. In conference play, Providence's four victories marked the most since 2011-12 when the team finished 5-11.
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN BIG EAST PRESEASON COACHES' POLL... The Friars were picked to finish ninth in the 2017-18 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. The announcement was made at the league's annual media day on Oct. 18 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

HIGHEST FINISH IN BIG EAST SINCE 1997-98... Providence finished in a three-way tie for seventh place in the BIG EAST Conference regular-season standings. It marks the highest finish for the program since conference realignment, and best finish overall in league play since 1997-98 when the team finished fourth in the BIG EAST 7 division.
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars return home to Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium to host DePaul and Marquette. Providence will host the Blue Demons on Sunday, Jan. 7 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a match-up against Marquette on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 7:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network via FOX Sports Go.
